NH is 15 bucks and its a "Shall issue" if they can't come up with a reason not too in 30 days you get it.

I guess you have to wait until you are actually threatened or attacked and have made a police report. Very nice. I guess the second amendment is subject to approval by the local cops.

You don't need a permit to carry in NH...as long as it's visible...only if you wish to carry concealed is a permit needed

We have that too. There used to be an old timer in Billings who would walk to church downtown with a couple six-shooters strapped to his belt. This was in 1981 and I was astonished, having just moved from California.
Things are definitely more relaxed up here, or were. When I came back here for a visit in '89 (moved to Colorado in '88) I bought a Ruger 9mm pistol in Bozeman. My buddies and I drove a little ways out of town, towards the Bridger Bowl ski area, and pulled over. We set up some cans and started shooting. A Sheriff came by and just wanted to know what kind of pistols we had, but there was no problem.

Back when I was in the Navy Reserve one of our aircrewmen was a Chicago area cop who had been raised out in the Montana or Wyoming. He told the story that sometime in his first year as a cop he pulled some guy over for speeding and saw a pistol in the front seat. Being from the West he didn’t think a thing of it and just gave the guy a ticket and sent him on his way. Later, at the station, he mentioned it to another cop and got in trouble for not drawing down on the guy and arresting him. His advice to all of us was to keep our guns out of sight and not mention them unless specifically asked.

Well I guess I'll add my two cents worth. Okay, I'm a talker, so this will be more like my dollar and a half worth. As a law enforcement range master, I suggest what others have said and find some place where you can rent handguns and find what works best for you. What works well for you may not work the same for your wife. I have a variety of handguns and although the revolvers are more simple for my wife to use, she does not like them slamming in her hand. They do not have the recoil spring to take up some of the recoil like semi autos do. Be careful with her with some of the semi autos, in particular, the ones with a polymer receiver or lower end. Some women have problems with them due to wrist strength and the weight of the slide creates a strange action with the wrist that causes extraction and feeding problems. Someone else made a great point about caliber. Shot placement is the key rather than size of round. I have investigated many cases where people were shot with large caliber weapons and survived and others where one well placed round with a small caliber weapon can take a large man like me out. A .22 can be quite devistating because they have a tendency to bounce around and off of things inside the body. I investigated one case where a woman was shot point blank in the back of the head with a .357 and she survived. Her husband was shot with a .22 and died. For home defense, I would recommend a twelve gauge pump shotgun. Do not keep a round in the chamber and if someone is entering or has entered your home, the sound of you racking a round into the chamber will stop them cold. Take it from an old cop who has been on the receiving end hearing that sound when entering a building after someone. It will stop you in your tracks and may loosen your bowels somewhat.

I was in my Local sporting goods/everthing store this week. Not walmart but an old time real local store. I needed a new refrigerator. I got one so don't need any recomendations there, but thanks anyway. To the point. I was mulling around and ended up at the gun section.I'v known the guy who handles the gun section for years. Used to play darts with him at one of our local bars on wednesday nights. Ah the good ole days. Anyway I asked how business was generally."Pretty slow generally, but gun sales are through the roof." "Particularly handgun sales." He stated he was having a hard time getting handguns as many models were on backorder.. So here's my rant..How d### dumb are we. Here we go again. When Clinton was elected they said, lock up guns and buy, buy, buy. He's gonna take all our guns...He didn't..Now, Obama's in..And its the same thing..Lock up your guns! He's gonna take um all.. And by the way...We got Glocks on special this week...

If I'm stoped while carying (it has happend twice) I ALWAYS inform the officer that I am armed, and include my permit with the other requested paper. I would rather be have them know..then find out!

There's some really good advice so far but I'll throw in a couple things that haven't been said yet. One of the important things for home defense is that you can fire "instinctive", or over the sights (as opposed to through the sights) - lighting may not be ideal. I carry a Heckler & Koch USP40 (Lara Croft gun) and/or a Smith & Wesson Airweight 38+P. One thing I do to pick a good firearm is to aim it at a point on wall or somewhere without looking at the gun, then check to see if the gun is pointing where you wanted it. If so, then it fits your hand. Auto or revolver is pretty much just personal preference - just don't go cheap. Caliber? .380 for auto or .38 for revolver is the absolute smallest effective. Even a .223 rifle round isn't very effective. Whatever caliber, shoot center mass until the threat is mitigated (quits moving). Also, think about keeping a good strong flashlight with the weapon for night use, like a Maglight. Use it copstyle, hold the light in the offhand, pinky towards the lighted end, rest the shooting hand wrist on your offhand wrist, curl the offhand wrist upwards so the backs of both hands are touching. Good stability and you are automatically aimed at the center of the light beam. Oh and by all means, take a class, and practice often. Good luck with the long lines at the gun store

HAH, you’re right. There’s nothing like the sound of a 12 gauge pump chambering a round. I have Mossberg pump with an 18 ½ barrel for just such an occasion. Years ago a buddy of mine had a guy break into his house in the middle of the night. When he chambered a round into his 12 gauge the intruder left so fast he missed a step breaking his leg. Both he and the cops thought it was pretty funny but, since it happened in California, I’m surprised the crook didn’t sue.

In the UK I am armed with some choice language and a flask of tea. 
I would suggest a different way of self defence though.
Obtain a claymore mine, wear it on your chest with a bit of padding underneath, run the wire and "clacker" into a pocket.
So when some desperado is holding you up and wants you to empty your pockets, empty your chest into them instead.
Word of warning though - make sure you have the claymore pointing the right way and always wear a t shirt you dont much like anymore. 
Would you need a permit to carry this as a concealed weapon?
Before the war on terror, if I saw an unattended package I used to think "I'll be having that!"

Wow, I am finding the state of Maryland really doesn't want residents from buying pistols. Two small guns shops have told me they State Police make it such a hassle and limit what they can carry, it's almost not worth the effort. One shop in Cumberland can't even get permit forms without a delay. He is getting help from a local State Delegate. Looks like I'll be better off going to a gun show and buying FTF with cash.

A lady needs options to match her style of the day. I range from a Ruger sp101 .357, to a p-38 9mm makarov, to a Keltec .380. For plinking I prefer my Ruger Mark II .22. And for a side arm during small game, a .22 revolver. At home, there's always the Winchester defender 18 in barrel or the SKS. Deer season brings out the reliable lever actions. ;-)

Lil' brother just bought a Glock 23 .40 cal. While looking at them, an off duty cop recommended the .40 cal over the 9mm. The cop said that people who are shot with the 9mm end up in the hospital. Those who are shot with a .40 cal aren't so lucky. The .40 cal leaves an exit wound the size of an orange.  Anyway, I can't wait to squeeze a few rounds off at some poor defenseless tomato can or watermelon.

I just bought a "Tommy-Gun" with the 50 round drum....they also make the old Army 45 .....fun to shoot ! the owners manual has a trooper on a Triumph military motorcycle firing his Tommy Gun !

I carry regularly and was always taught that if you are going to carry , do it as often as possible. Then if the need to defend yourself should arise it is harder to argue premeditation by reason of possession. In other words they have a hard time saying you had the gun because you intended to shoot the person. The 2nd thing I was always taught is NEVER PULL A GUN UNLESS YOU PLAN TO USE IT You shouldn't try and intimidate this usually only serves to escilate things.

Nice: - An SP101 is at the top of my wish list - I found a nice Keltec, but didn't read good things about them (too light). What's your opinion? - I also own an Mk II and it's a hoot for bottles/can shooting. I don't shoot it often enough. Quote:

Well, I gave up trying to get a larger handgun here in Maryland after visiting at least ten shops in three counties and two states. I ordered a Taurus Model 66/357 with a 4" barrel. Being processed through an FFL in my town. Guessing that might take a few weeks. only draw back to the FFL is that you give consent to search your house. They can come search any time with no warrant.I have never known that to happen but they can.

The Curious and Relics FFL 03, allows you to trade in firearms more the 50 years old without signing away your rights to search and seizure. FFL and fully auto license make you liable to search at any hour.

Thanks for all the advice everyone!
I've talked to all of the pawn shop sellers in town and ended up buying a new Walther PPK/S .380 at the main gun dealer in town.
I really like the classic look of the PPK, the weight is fine, 7 rounds is plenty, lifetime warranty, and there's a $50 rebate right now. It just made sense. There is an indoor shooting range I'm going to make use of and possibly take the concealed carry class at some point when I can find time.
Now I have to wait until next Friday when I can go to the Sheriff's office to apply for the purchase permit and then the following week to take the purchase permit to the city police to register the gun...then I can finally pick the darn thing up!
