That looks like a very nice choice, now practice, practice, practice, and... don't store it loaded in the oven, (mythbusters) heheheh
Well, looks like I'lll just be dreaming about owning a nice revolver. The great state of Maryland just shot down my purchase. Later this afternoon, I rec'd this from Buds:
Order - Cancellation Pending Please contact us about this order, this gun does not come with a fired shell casing which is requirement for your state. You are welcome to switch to another gun or we can refund your money. Let us know Budsgunshop.com
One shop owner described this to me but I had no idea it would prevent mail order to a FFL. As I understand it from the shop owner, the gun manufacturer is required to submit a fired shell casing to the Maryland State Police so if the gun is used in a crime, it can be traced. The shop owner said the program cost several million dollars and to date hasn't yield any results. My wife, said it is up for repeal this year in legislative session.
So, now I'm back to trying to find this gun in a Maryland shop, unless someone has a better idea I can pursue.

Wow.... they don't have any bank robberies in Md , either I'll bet! <LOL> I have the itty bitty S&W .38+ Airweight. My only complaint is that it's so light it has way more recoil than my .45 Gold Cup. Not actually comparing apples and bananas, am I? The one that really kicks is the Benelli .12 ga... I did take the CCW course last Sat, but they are so far behind it may be 6 mos before I actually get my permit... Oh make sure you wife gets lessons at the very least if she doesn't know how to shoot... Explaining WHY you don't want to look at the target is the hardest part. The two cops that taught the CCW course did a great job explaining. They simply said that you couldn't look at three things at the same time, just line up the front and rear sights. Pretty cool guys, no "I am super cop God" attitude. I also learned that I can't see the front sight with or without my bifocals... ( ... next time I'll wear my puter reading glasses.... Mary

While I’m not an expert in shooting a pistol (although I did get that medal in the Navy) I have found that treating the barrel as an extension of my index finger has been pretty effective when shooting on a combat course. Certainly lining up the sights is the most accurate method for an aimed shot, but after practicing the point and shoot method for a while I found that it is pretty good for hitting very near center mass out to 15 yards or so.
Thirty years ago at a Navy pistol range we were doing a basic courier pistol qualification and one of my buddies couldn’t hit the target. The instructor had him safe his weapon and just point his finger at the target and then closely look down his finger to see where it was pointed. After that he began to think of the revolver as an extension of his finger and his scores improved dramatically. While that will not result in many hits in the X ring it does allow you to put effective rounds in a man sized target very quickly.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Both Heckler & Koch and Smith & Wesson include fired shell casings with every new firearm. I just bought the wife a S&W Airweight .38+P. Conceals very nicely in a leather pancake, shoots great, and when loaded with the right ammo (I use Hydra-Shok), will really really ruin a perp's day.

PS - on the "fired casing" thing. If the cops find a fired casing at the scene, this database will allow them to narrow the search down to a specific maker and perhaps model (and caliber obviously). They still need to locate and obtain the exact firearm used and take that prefired casing, or fire a shot for comparision. Of course, if an abrasive object like a file were to accidentally rub against the firing pin at some point, the comparison will yield a negative result.
Just pointing out the weakness of that system, not advocating any shady actions.

Springfield Armory (XD 45) sends a spent shell as well. Thought it was just to show the gun had been tested.

Add Ruger to that list of fired casing. I also just thought it was proof the gun worked. Hey I have thousands of fired rounds kicking around the basement what do you need?

Keltec is light, great for just carrying in your pocket. With any firearm, are you comfortable with it and can you hit a target with it? Consider self defence target range, you should be able to hit center mass at close range. If they are further than say ten to fifteen feet and you need to shoot, well, thats another story.

Well now Wade, while Jimi Hendrix definitely did the best known cover of "Hey Joe", it was written by one Billy Roberts and performed by various bands around SoCal before Hendrix made it famous.
Jus' a little trivia
The original lyrics:
Hey Joe, where you goin' with that money in your hand? Hey Joe, where you goin' with that money in your hand? Chasin' my woman, she run off with another man.
Goin' downtown, buy me a Forty Four. Goin' downtown, buy me a Forty Four. When I get through that woman won't run no more.
Hey Joe, what you gonna do? Hey Joe, what you gonna do? Take my pistol, and kill her before I'm through
Hey Joe, I heard you shot your woman dead. Hey Joe, I heard you shot your woman dead. Yes I did, got both of them lying in that bed.
Hey Joe, where do you think you'll go? Hey Joe, do you think you'll go? Leaving here think I'll go to Mexico.
Yes I'm going, going where a man can be free. Yes I'm going, going where a man can be free. 'Cause there ain't no hangman puttin' no noose on me.
So, your kinda right, that particular wording does belong to Jimi

Today, a gun enthusiast buddy brings over his new, Ruger LCP. It's very nice, light and small. He says the recoil is very small, despite the light weight (his girl friend shoots it well). They're around $350, but due to a recall on the first edition, there are few to be found. My gun shop guy said not to fall prey to price gouging, they should be avaialble next year. Anyone else have the Ruger LCP?
On a plus note, I completed the "Maryland Firearms Safety Training Course" which entitles me to buy a pistol when I find one. (online, took about 30 minutes)

I like a shotgun for home defense. Aim doesn't have to be perfect, and I don't have to worry about stray bullets going into the neighbor's house. It's a good idea to keep a flashlight handy with that pistol, and I'm saving up for a StreamLight TLR-1 for my Remington 870 with an 18 1/2 inch barrel.
We had a home invasion a week ago that was only a couple of miles from our house. Happened at noon and the owner was killed. There's been more reports lately of the Mexico drug wars spilling over across the border.

I'm a city guy who never has owned or fired a gun of any type other than a BB gun. I think that the shotgun approach would be best. I'm thinking that I would be pretty scared in the event that I was confronting someone in a home situation. I'm guessing I wouldn't be as collected as folks are in the movies. The ability to point in the general direction of the intruder and create a lot of harm sounds pretty attractive.
Women and cats will do as they please. Men and dogs should just get used to that fact and relax

Probably worth noting that with inside-the-house ranges shotgun blasts aren't going to spread much even with a short barrel. But it will make a pretty big hole.

Just keep in mind that a pistol or revolver is something you have to allow you to fight your way to get that shotgun or rifle that will be your real weapon of choice.
Nothing prepares you better than practice and then more practice. You really cannot scare anybody just by showing them a gun.....you need to be able to place a round in the right place to take them down now!
I got into 5 firefights during my lifetime as a NYCPD officer and every time I reverted to the training I had recieved and used a two handed hold on the gun, dropped into a crouch and stepped to the left, brought my front sight up to lower center mass and emptied the gun, found cover, reloaded and then assessed the situation. It always worked and kept me alive.
What you practice you will use when the chips are down so it pays to practice often and well. Remember most gunfights take place within 24 feet of your muzzle so do not waste a lot of time and ammo shooting at 25 yds with one hand.

Thank you Officer Corrigan. There are home defense training courses you can take to become more proficient and prepared. The tactical shotgun forum over at shotgunworld.com has a list of courses stickied near the the top. If you can't afford one of these classes, at least buy a book on the subject. "The Tactical Shotgun" by Gabe Suarez is a good one.
An old CMSGT in the Air Force taught me the 6 Ps: Proper Planning Prevents P#ss Poor Performance. IMO Practice and training are a must when using firearms.

My wife and I both went and got our concealed handgun license here in TX. We both took the shooting part of the course with my 9mm Baby Desert Eagle manufactured by Israel Weapon Industries which is imported by Magnum Research. It has been an very reliable pistol. The clip holds 15 rounds. Price wise, HighPoint Arms makes some pistols that are very affordable and the company stands behind them. They are cheap however and as you know you get what you pay for. With HighPoint you can get a 380, a 9mm or even a 45 for around $200.00. Walther makes a new 9mm called the PPS which is much thinner, lighter and they have removed all the rough edges to make drawing it much easier. Easily concealed and the ladies love it. Actually I liked it as well as my wife. Very much worth looking into. Bond Arms makes a little 2 shot derringer which will shoot 45 caliber and/or .410 shotgun shells. This is a nice little surprise to pull, with little chance of missing your target but with only 2 shots it limits your choices a little. There are many choices out there as you probably have found out by now. I actually went to buy a Glock because my State Trooper friends recommended them above all the other brands. The Baby Eagle just happen to have fit my hand perfect, was nice and light and I liked the 15 round clip and it came with a second clip. I never leave home without it. Some people never carry their weapons chambered but I always have mine loaded and chambered. In an emergency you won't have time to do it. It has a decocker (safety) that can be moved and fired with one hand. Good Luck with your search and good riding to you.

A good choice for self and home defense would also be a new Taurus 4410 or 4510 . It is a 5 shot revolver using a .45 or .410 shotgun shell. Different length barrels are available and the barrel is engraved with "The Judge" near the muzzle. My next pistol: Springfield XD

This morning I bought a Ruger SP101/357, 3 & 1/16" barrel in stainless from a shop in Rockville, MD. I can pick up up in a week (MD..). Now I have to find a place to shoot it in Frederick or Hagerstown. http://www.snubnose.info/docs/sp101.htm

Skillet, I have a Springer XD9 service (4 inch barrel, model 9101) with accessories (holster, speed loader, lock, double mag holder, and two high capacity mags) that I would sell you for a decent price if you're interested. 500 rounds have been through it without a misfeed or FTF, and it's been cleaned after every trip to the range. I've owned it for a month and a half. It would be shipped to the FFL of your choice. PM me if interested.

In MD, prices are definitely higher. Gun was $519. Here's the same gun at GunBroker.com. Looks like it could go for the opening bid of $425. But, with shipping and transfer fees($25 & $50) I'm within $20 of that price. At least I was able to handle and compare the gun to the more expensive (and way heavier) Ruger GP100. The guy gave me some ammo advice (38's and +38's) and is there if I ever need work done. Also good news - I found a good place to shoot 25 minutes from the house. Neighbor stopped over and saw the box of shells on the counter and concluded I bought a pistol. She said I'm welcome at their family farm (100 acres) to shoot at my leisure. Not sure I was ready to join a local club to shoot at their range, we'll see how addictive this is. Here's the GunBroker.com ad with the same gun: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=117154095

"Not sure I was ready to join a local club to shoot at their range, we'll see how addictive this is." Join the club, (if they are nice) I ride to the club on my bike to practice and compete. fun all the time.... Get some good instruction and practice, you will find it very enjoyable, find someone to work with you and practice, practice, practice and you will have lots more fun, but, above all, BE SAFE, control that muzzle, and keep your finger off the trigger untill you are ready to destroy what you are aiming at. Don't sweep your body parts or any of your friends with the muzzle. Ride safe and be safe.

A month ago, my local shop had a Taurus Model 66 357 for $375. Well, it was sold pretty quick. This weekend I asked if he could get another and he quoted me $460! I said what happened to $375 and he said prices just went up. I gave him two Rugers to price and am still waiting for his call, didn't much care for that guy, guess he has more business than he can handle here lately. Like I said early on, here in MD we just don't have many choices and price shopping really isn't much of an option. I was glad to be able to hold each of the guns I was interested in and said "sold" pretty quick this morning. (he had one of each model I wanted)

If your looking for a top rate revolver at a great price, check out the Ruger SP101. They sell new around here for $399. They are stainless steel, indestructable, 5 shot, and easily concealable with the 2 1/8 or 3 inch barrel. The 2 1/8 inch barrel version also is available with a spurless hammer, for snag free drawing from pockets, etc. Mine is a 357Mag and is super reliable and easy to shoot. It has fixed sights, but they are spot-on from the factory.

That's the gun I bought, with 3 & 1/16" barrel as pictured here: http://www.snubnose.info/docs/sp101.htmQuote:
If your looking for a top rate revolver at a great price, check out the Ruger SP101. They sell new around here for $399. They are stainless steel, indestructable, 5 shot, and easily concealable with the 2 1/8 or 3 inch barrel. The 2 1/8 inch barrel version also is available with a spurless hammer, for snag free drawing from pockets, etc. Mine is a 357Mag and is super reliable and easy to shoot. It has fixed sights, but they are spot-on from the factory.
