Adobe Photoshop and Photoshop LE are super programs. Macs generally aren't bundled with image editing software.

I just gave The Gimp a try last week. I needed an image editing program on a borrowed laptop and I didn't want (or need) to install my copy of Photoshop on it. It worked very well. It's greatly improved since I tried it last, a few years ago. Oh, and it's completely free.

I use Paint Shop Pro, and also have Photoshop installed for complicated little items I want to play with.. PSP is relatively easy to reduce the size and quality..

iPhoto came bundled with every Mac I've bought since 2002, very handy tool for photo correction and resizing and the book publishing feature is a nice plus. I use Image Ready from Adobe for resizing and the ubiquitous Photoshop (CS) for image adjustment. I used GIMP years ago on a Linux machine I built and I have to admit it's well thought out and worked; it's my understanding that it is now cross-platform friendly but I haven't given it a try.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. Herm Albright (1876 - 1944)

Corel PhotoPaint is also good, although not as advanced as later versions of Adobe Photoshop. I loaded Gimp at work (no license for Photoshop there), but it locked up my XP machine. Tried reinstallation, etc., but gave up after two hours. I still miss Micrografx Picture Publisher. There wasn't even a wake. Jack

Microsoft has a free photo editor called Paint.NET. Windows only, of course. It requires that the .NET framework be installed but it's fast and did I mention free? http://www.getpaint.net/

I think Irfanview, and Gimp are the absolute best and simplest. Irfanview is simpler and easier, Gimp is harder, but has a LOT more editing available.
