I KNOW what "Get out the vote!" MEANS, but it never made much grammatical sense to me. Does anyone here know the origins of this phrase and why it's worded the way it is? BTW, I hope those of you out there who are qualified and able, really do "Get out the vote!" today, and regardless of who wins and what issues are passed, let's pull together and give the winning candidates and issues a chance once the election is over. Peace!

This was not intended to be a politically biased thread for one candidate or the other, and I hope that others will refrain from their urges to make comments regarding one party/candidate or the other in reply.

I stopped voting years ago. The system is too corrupt, and I don't want responsibility for the harm these so-called representatives inflict on all of us. Hope this isn't controversial.

JB raises a valid point (I can't answer), should be alright if folks don't start "chumming the water" with their favorite brand of red or blue herring.
Then again, could just nuke it now
I have a voter logistics question. Don't most states have an absentee voter ballot system?? Translated to "why would anyone sit in a voter line for 6-8 hours on election day?" I'm amazed watching some of the news clips of lines 10-12 miles long.

They had early voting here last Saturday but I heard the lines were long also. When I pulled up on my bike this morning at 6:45 at the little Baptist church where I vote it looked to be about a 1-2 hr wait so I came to work and decided to try again this afternoon. In past presidential elections the wait was about 10 minutes. So if nothing else this campaign has sparked a lot of interest and new voters. Hey a lot of brave soldiers have died for this one simple right we have. So get out and Vote!

I think it means for people to get out and spread the word to others to excercise their voting right.

JC, I was wondering the same thing. Are we not hip? Is this a generational thing? Is it because we are backward Arkys?
By the way, I didn't stand in line at all to vote this morning. From the time I got out of my car, voted and left, a whopping 14 minutes had gone by.
Didn't buy into the hype, you can keep the change.

Yeah John, I think I know how that all started!
You see, originally the phrase "Get out the vote" was actually two sentences, "The VOTE? GET OUT!", and it was started by some folks like Jack here who don't vote because evidently cynicism had overwhelmed them, and in their defense, sometimes justifiably so.
But because it seemed fewer and fewer people were bothering to exercise their Right to vote, a Right for which many many people over the years had actually given their lives in defense of, eventually some other folks said something like, "Hey! Maybe if we turn that phrase around and maybe make it one sentence instead of two and also get rid of that question mark, then maybe more folks will go do their civic duty and help steer this country's course, and maybe even in a way honor those who, as Lincoln once so elequently put it, "had given the last full measure of their devotion"."
And thus, THIS is how we've come to know the phrase "Get out the vote" as it is today!
(...or the story goes SOMETHING like that anyway!)

I looked it up in Wikpedia. It is a slogan started by non-partisan groups such as women league of voters to get people out to vote because they think it will affect society negatively if they don't...vote that is. I believe they said it originated around 1990 but the roots go back even farther then that. www.wikpedia.com

Melvin, allow me to explain somethin' to ya here.... The most likely scenario once any particular name is mentioned in this thread is going to be that somebody will say something like the following... "Oh YEAH! Well if "THAT GUY"(take your pick here) is elected then this country is DOOMED, I tells ya!!!" ...or.... "Well, if "THAT GUY"(once again, take your pick) is elected then I'm movin' to CANADA!" ...or...well...I think you see by now what'll probably happen once a name, ANY name, is mentioned in this thread, right?! (and besides, how many threads started by JB do ya wannna see locked this week anyway, HUH?!)

Not before I exhort everyone here to write me in for candidate!!! If elected I promise....

Off to vote in about an hour and then turn the boob tube off for the night!(the wife will be glued to it though!) She got through in about 40 minutes but we live in upstate Connecticut so not a lot of people, but we'll see if that's different when I go and people are voting on the way home!

Again, the phrase seems (to me) to be grammatically "clumbsy." I stopped over to vote at lunch, and there was NO LINE AT ALL. Everything went as smoothly as poop through a goose.

We only THINK that this will finally be the end of the election season. We will now have unending news coverage of the winner and the loser and endless discussion about why one lost and the other didn't, and what it will all mean now, etc, etc, ad infinitum, AD NAUSEUM.
Part of my morning routine is to turn on the news networks before I roll out of bed just to see who died the night prior. Apparently few people of newsworthy note have expired over the course of the last few months, because very little time has been spent on famous obits.

It's only early afternoon here in Tulsa (3:40pm). The polls don't close for another 3 hrs and 20 minutes, but it seems from all the polls that Obama has more electoral votes. However there are about 5 battle ground states that are too close to call and there are a large percentage of undecided voters out there, so McCain still has a shot.
This has been an unpaid bi-partisan announcement and I approve this message.

For those of us who don't live in the US version of a democracy, can someone explain to me why a given candidate winning only a few particular states will guarantee them the presidency? It seems like they're saying "Oh I know that these 20 states will vote for me, and those 20 states will vote for him, so the race is only for the remaining few undecided states." which from a foreign perspective seems an odd way of doing things.
FYI the system here is that you vote for your local member, who probably belongs to a given party. The party that has the most members voted in forms government and the party leader automatically becomes prime minister, assuming he won a seat (which they always do, they're given "safe" seats). We don't hold a separate election for the country's leader.

A right to vote is equal to, no more, no less than an individual's right NOT to vote. I get fed up of hearing the attempt to dishonor people for not voting because our veteran's did whatever, etc. etc. It's like freedom of speech; if I choose to speak, so be it. If I don't, then just as good. Right to bear arms. I don't have one. The right does not mean that I have to have one, just that I can. Flag burning, though it sickens my heart terribly, I believe is a right protected under freedom of speech. I would never do it and hate those that do but that is what makes this country what it is. Home of the FREE! Rights allow us chosse how to act, not dictate how we must act.
That being said, I voted today. I served 4+ honorable years in the USN and am proud of it. I go to PGR rides and always hold veterans, living or dead, in the highest esteem. I just wish people would understand what a right truly is and try not to use guilt and other methods of having people conform to their ways of thinking.
Right = Choice = Freedom
It is that simple.
Ride On!

Its hard to explain, google electorial college and it should explain it to you. here a person can win most of the states and still lose the election. Weird I know, but thats how it is.
