So I was at the HD dealer a few days ago, looking at gremlin bells. I asked the lady behind the counter if their other outlet across town, a big Japanese bike dealer, might have a different selection. She replied that she didn't think so, because "It's really a Harley thing. People riding sport bikes don't use gremlin bells." Until this conversation, I hadn't realized that Harley makes the only non-sport bikes on the planet. On a better note, I pulled into a gas station the other evening to make a quick adjustment to my America. It was after dark, and I was trying to get my new headlight system aimed correctly. I was almost done when a couple on a 'Glide pulled up and asked if everything was OK. They said if I needed anything, they'd be glad to help. I told 'em all was well and thanked them for asking. Glad to know folks still do this.  Jack

Eric Buell sold the Buell company to HD a few years back.. SO in a way a Buell is a HD

Yeah, wouldn't want the HD dealer to confuse this with something The Motor Company might actually sell under the Buell badge...

In my mind's eye, I ride like that alot, in reality you have to be able to get your butt outa the seat ...

I called the local HD dealer to see if they had a Blast. She replied, no.
I thought that was funny.

Getting my butt out of the seat wouldn't be a problem but getting it back on the seat - - - there might be a problem.

Not sure who this is, but why is he hanging so far off the bike when he's barely leaning? The pro racers barely hang off when they're D*mn near dragging the fairings.

Maybe that IS WHY he's not leaning more.
Now if he were off to the other side of the seat, he could get some real angle.

Here's that Buell 1125R from the front:  And, really now, the out-of-cockpit lean is really to compensate for the bike's lack of will to lean, isn't it?

The more you hang off the bike means the less the bike has to lean to take the same curve at the same speed. The less the bike leans, means more tire is being used and you achieve more traction.
And by the way...the bike is "barely leaning" because he's just entering the turn...it'll be leaned over a heck of a lot more in 20 yards or so.

Actually Mark, modern motorcycle tires are designed to put a larger portion of a tire's contact patch on the road as you lean them over.
(there's an article in this month's "Motorcyclist Magazine" about this very thing)
The reason a motorcycle "feels" and actually is somewhat less stable the more it's leaned over into a turn is that the bike and rider are fighting the gyroscopic effect of the machine's wanting to stay in a straight line and thus "right" itself. (Newton's First Law of Inertia)
And, the "sideway forces" which this turning process applies to the tire, in effect places less of the bike's downward "weight" upon the road's surface.

Dang it all Dwight! I was expecting you to weigh in with a dissertation on John Surtees and how the out-of-cockpit method came into being...not even a symbolic bit of Dwightish either...where's the fun?

You are correct, but I'm talking about traction. Contact patch and traction are two related but ultimately separate matters here. There are many other factors in traction beside contact patch such as center of gravity, coefficient of friction, normal force, as well as others I've forgotten since college Physics.
