Has anyone has any problems with the UK cops and TOR pipes. I am looking at getting a pair but the 'for off road use only' stamp might give the cops a bit of a clue. So a few questions 1) Are they so loud that they will attract the attention of the law 2) Is there any badge / sticker that can be used to cover the stamp and 3) If it all goes T**s up what is the penalty for having illegal cans - fine or points? I know it may seem I am a bit of a wuss but I can do without the attention right now.

" Hope I don't get

Hmmmmm. Either this newbie here is just the shy and retiring type or he's thinkin' of using his new Triumph to go pick up the ransom money...but I can't tell which at this time!!!

(BTW...the TORs aren't all that much more louder...offhand I'd say it would have to be one major "stickler" of a cop who'd hassle you over 'em)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Have the short TORS and no problem (and I am often in York) - not too loud as to upset anyone but boy do they make a difference from stock.

A sound investment in my opinion

BTW Triumph dealer in York is excellent!

I have the short TORs with one baffle removed and the only problem I've had was when an MOT place failed it on noise - so I took it somewhere else

I've followed cops and been followed by cops more than few times (we were going the same way rather than for anything I'd done) and I've also pulled up next to several foot patrols to ask directions, etc. and not had problems with my long TORS. As Steve, above, says, it's more likely an unappreciative MOT tester that'll fail you for them. Refit the stockers, get the pass then swap them back.

I've got short slash TORs on my BA and i just love the sound. Not over the top and the rap pap pap as you accelerate out of a 30 zone is addictive as indeed is the wap pap pop on the over run slowing into a 30 zone LOL. I've never spent so much time accelerating and decelerating on a bike. Not doing much for my carbon foot print

That said, if you keep a constant throttle (and high gear) as you pass the law they are relatively quiet and unobtrusive (the pipes that is, not the law LOL)

Only had the bike this year but no problems with the law or the neighbors.

Get em.... ya know you want too

I've got long TORs on, and it really isn't that loud, unless you wind it up.

I've had TORs on my Thruxton and have not encountered any problems either. Again the rule of keeping the revs down to lower levels when around town etc applies but they do enhance the bike no end.

I'm planning on getting some TORs for my America though I'm going to run it in on the standard pipes first.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Fitted the pipes today. Give a deeper sound but not too loud. Will keep the cops happy. At the moment not touched the AI or carbs/jets.Looked at all the instrctions on the site and for a novice it looked too daunting! I will see how the plugs are after a week. A couple of mates have suggested that I should be OK. Dwight don't worry no plans for blackmail yet.

Well done. Now, prepare to watch your fuel consumption increase...

...not coz the pipes automatically use more fuel...

...but coz you'll be rolling on and off a lot more just to hear the "rap pap pap" and "wap pap pop", as Mark described it.

Although, I'm not convinced it sounds like that...it's more a 'chiggerchiggerchigger' as you get on the loud handle, although that's as much from the airbox; the zorsts provide a bass backing to it. And on the over run, it's more of a 'prupprup-prup---pop'.

See?

I immediately installed the long TORS on my speedmaster as soon as I got it. The stock pipes were real quiet. I since have drilled out the last baffle making lots of small 3/8" holes around the exit pipe. The sound is getting better and better the more I drill it. I have no idea of what they are making those baffles of but I can only drill three holes before I have to sharpen the bit again.

It makes a nice rumble at idle and is peaceful and nice on the ears until you get to about 3,500 RPM. Then if you crank it on in 2nd or 3rd it really roars and the bike goes ballistic. I haven't pushed it beyond 6,500 RPM in any gear yet but I will when I find an empty enough road. The roar of the pipes and the sensation of speed when really cranking it on is a real rush and scares the crap out of my wife. I love it.

The only real maintenance the bike needs is to keep the chain clean and oiled at least weekly. Great machine!

That stamp is on the extreme underside of the pipes. If they really want to look, they will have to lay down on their side.

Ever see a cop laying down to check anything due to excessive noise?

I'd say you'd have to be really unlucky to get pulled for TORs. They're nowhere hear as loud as a Ducati or HD. Most old bill will see it's a Triumph and think it should sound that way anyhow.
