Hi Guys, I need to look at the firmware and maps from 270° igniters. I'm offering to raise your rev limit for just the cost of postage. The igniters I'm looking for are from both 790 & 865 Americas & Speedmasters and a unit from a Scrambler.

Your igniters will be perfectly safe, I just plug them in to my laptop, make any changes you want, get the info I want and post it back to you.

I only need one of each type, so first come, first served. Mail me.

How have you made out with the one you have? Or do you not own one of our bikes? Its one of the most expensive parts on a Triumph.

Exactly what improvement would you make? I don't want a 360, thats why I bought a 270. I am not injected so no maps there.

Why not remap a 360 to a 270 and save us a bunch of money?

I try to aggravate one person a day. Today may be your day.

Hi Satxron, as my sig say's I have a Bonnie black.

Inside your igniter are five ignition adavance maps for 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% & 100% throttle opening. The TPS determines which mapping is being used and interpolates between them. These are what I'm interested in so I can build custom maps for the 270° twins.

As I said, in exchange for the loan of an igniter, I will raise your rev limit and even add some advance on the WOT map. In the very near future these services will be available at my web site Triumph Twin Power

If you want to know more, go here: New Triumph Bonneville Forum go to the "General Discussion" section and look for the thread "Gills Ignition Module" and have a read.

Hi Ray, I believe DynoJet are doing something with the Power Commander for the EFI twins.

How much are you going to charge once you get up and running? I am really interested in bumping up the RPM's a little but I am also afraid of being the Guinea Pig too as the igniters are a little pricey and mine has been working great since day one.

Mike,

Thanks for the info and the opportunity to upgrade our CDI units. I've read most of the posts on the other website. I'm interested. I have an 03 790 America.

I have a couple of questions. Background - I currently have my TPS sensor disconnected due to a problem with the variable resistor. The bike quits after about 15 minutes of running with it hooked up. When I disconnect it, it runs fine. I've noticed that the bike runs well and the popping on decelleration has completely disappeared. Full throttle is fine but acceleration in the lower rpm range seems a bit weaker than before. Still have the rev limiter cutting in at around 7100 indicated with the bike pulling strong.

My questions -
1. Is the TPS sensor needed to get the most out of the current mapping?
2. Are the current CDI units set up to improve emissions vs performance (Decel popping is gone with the TPS disconnected). What mapping preference do you use - performance vs emissions?
3. Can the TPS sensor be replaced (different resistance values) to better improve timing
4. When will the 270 degree engine rev limiter increase be available and to what extend (rpm limit)?

Regards
Greg

Hi 69tri1, the shopping cart on my site will be up and running in a couple of weeks. The cost of just raising the rev limit will be £30 +VAT and the cost of a remap and raising the rev limit will be £85 +VAT, of course if you're outside the EU the VAT won't worry you. There will also be a return postage charge of between £8-£15 depending on where you are, this is a signed for service with insurance.

I can understand your concern as the igniters are very expensive, but the process is just a connection to my laptop, make the required changes and return in the post. I have worked on many 360° igniters with no ill effects and the process is identical.

Hi Greg, with the TPS disconnected you are only using the 100% WOT map, this is not detrimental to your engine as many guys with Mik 42's are running without a TPS. But it does mean you are using WOT ignition advance for all throttle openings.

3D ignition advance mapping was developed to take in to account the load on the engine as different throttle openings at different engine speeds effect the speed of combustion and altering the angle of ignition advance takes this in to account.

Answering your questions:
1) Yes
2) My maps will be performance orientated.
3) Not that I know of without a lot of work and development.
4) Soon after I get some loan units. Gill igniters can rev to 15,500rpm, but you wouldn't want that.

I am just curious as to how you accomplished raising the rev limit in the 270 igniters where so many others have failed. I assume that you have done real world testing and had good results. Please convince me so that I can have you reflash mine.

LKR, have so many failed before? I only know of Jojje in Sweden who can change igniter settings, do you know others?

The 270° igniters are the same unit as the 360° igniters with different wiring connections to trigger the second coil, and different firmware.

I'm glad to see this. From my perspective the primary value of this initiative for an 865/270 SM is going to be in the remap, & not so much the higher rev-limiter, unless there is a high performace cam set & headwork to go with it.

PieMan about 2 or 3 years ago I was going to have Jojje work his magic on my rev limiter, but after sending some email notes back and forth Jojje said that he was not having great success modifying the 270 engine igniter. This was about the time he was going to quit doing the modification for out of country buyers. He offered to due the work any way because of our previous emails. At that time I made the decision not to have the changes made because he was still not pleased with the way the modification performed. The man has integrity. I assume that the problems have been overcome and he is again shipping out of country. I haven't kept up to speed or given it much thought until I read your post. I am extremely interested in reading about your products when your website has been completed.

LKR, I'm not sure what problems Jojje was having with the 270° igniters, but he uses a different method of programming which I believe involves opening the unit up, but I only heard this through someone else, so I can't be sure.

My method is purely electronic, I just plug the igniter into my laptop and change what needs to be changed.

Mike,
There have been quite a few members of this site over the years who have had ignitors fail. Most were covered under warranty but a few had to purchase a new one - an expensive item.

So I have a possibly dumb question for you. Since you have the means to access and change the programming of these ignitors, do you believe it might be possible that some of these failed ignitors may have somehow had their mapping corrupted rather than an outright failure?
I don't know that anyone has yet been able to determine the cause of these failures. If there is a chance of resurrecting a failed ignitor I'm sure there would be some interest.

The technology is way over my head - I'm just putting this out there to get your opinion.

Deon,
this is a possibility, but unlikely as I would expect the 360° igniters to suffer the same death, but they don't. I can only imagine it's down to positioning, the 270° igniters are under the tank above the engine open to getting wet and hot unlike the 360° igniters which are under the seat, cool and dry.

Our igniters do have a self diagnosic system built in, but I have never accessed a bad one to find out what data it gives out.

Yes, I have to open them up, but the programming is the same. At least on the earlier 270 you can only got to about 8000rpm, never tried it on the new ignitors

Isn't it the purpose of load-based advance to optimize efficiency under steady-state, partial-throttle conditions? If disconnecting TPS disables this, I would expect it to adversely affect fuel mileage, especially when cruising. Has anyone here with TPS disabled compared before/after mileage?

I haven't really noticed any large drop in fuel mileage. Still use 10 to 11 liters/200 km in the city.

Mine has been disconnect for about three years now. I can't say I really noticed any adverse effects on fuel mileage as a result. My fuel mileage seems more affected by my right hand. Im still running the original carbs, pod filters and 160 mains. Mid 40s when driving like a responsible adult. Most times its around 40. My last dyno run show a nice even rise across the the power curve.

Well gents, it looks like PieMan's website is up and running. http://www.triumphtwinpower.com/ As soon as the season is over here, I think I'll be sending mine for an upgrade.

Has there been any feedback from anyone on any 270 ignitors that have been modded?

Pieman has just modded mine to 8500. It is in transit back to Canada. I probably won't be up and running until April so if you can wait....

Gregger make sure you post up what its like... I am sorely tempted to do mine, even take a ride down and maybe get our Pieman to do it while I wait Once I hear some reports back it should make my mind up.

For a basically street stock SM motor (no head work, BB, or cams), what is the value of an increased rev limit?

Depending on your camshaft config and timing, more horsepower. The 790s made their max power at 7400 rpm, while the 865s maxed out around 6800.

From what I've read, if you want to increase your performance on the later models, get more agressive cams and get Pieman to increase the rev limit and advance the timing profile.

PS - Just received my CDI unit today... now all I need to do is wait for the snow to disappear...April...sigh...

Good comment regarding the distinction between the 790 v. 865. IIRC the stock 865 SM box redlines at 7600 RPM.

+1!

Going to rise the rev limiter to and also advance the timing...

I am drowling over the Mikuni´s at the moment... not cheap!

.... the SAAB need´s new back shocks too..... but that can wait...or what do you think!?

+1 My motor really feels like its coming alive about the same time that I am hitting the rev limiter. I think another 500-700 RPM would be nice! Give me a couple more MPH too while were at it!

Happy Birthday Johann!
Still ice on the road down in the dark forest?
