It's OK to be a follower when you're a new rider as long as you make it part of your learing experience. When you're more comfortable on your Speedy you can make the pass around a group of riders and wave to them.
Get involved with a local RAT group and do some rides with other guys. See if group rides is your cup of tea or if you like solo rides. Everyone is different. It's all good.
