Next month I plan on changing out my chain and sprockets. I do not have a socket that will fit the front sprocket nut.Can anyone tell me the size of the nut? Hopefully in SAE and MM size would be nice to know maybe I can pick up a single socket at the flea market. I check in the Tech Vault but could not find any info. Thanks for you help.

One thing there, it's much easier to break the front sprocket nut free if you can use the chain and rear brake to your advantage...I sat on the bike (in neutral to protect the tranny) and held down the rear brake and freed the front nut with a 36 mm socket on a breaker bar. I was only swapping the front sprocket but surely you'll want to at least free that nut prior to breaking the chain.
The other thing is the he doesn't count the links of the old chain before he tosses it; save yourself a headache and count the old one (don't forget the link you removed).

Also a 36mm is the same size a 1 7/16 in SAE.

Advance Auto Parts sells some singled out tools. Don't know if they'd have an 1-7/16 though.

A small block of wood where the chain meets the sprocket, plus applying the rear brake will help too.

Thanks all for the information much appreciated. Just a thought but maybe the socket size should be placed in the tech vault.

I used the block of wood and someone holding the rear brake. Using a torque amplifier was a huge help breaking it free. Torque Amplifier - heavy PVC or other pipe you can slip over the socket wrench handle for better leverage.
