I was told by my local dealer that the crankcase vents into the airbox(2006). I ended up with a little oil in the bottom of the airbox once after a long trip and the mechanic said that was blowout from the crankcase breather possibly due to over filling the crankcase, which I don't think I did. I've never gotten what I thought was a satisfactory answer.
Hopefully someone who knows more than I do can answer this.
