You can run the rpms above what the sticker on the tank says, just do not maintain the rpms above what is recommended. During the first couple hundred miles I didn't stay at the same rpm for more than a minute, and went over what the tank specified periodically, but only briefly.
The oil usage appears to be a problem with early 2007 engines, which were installed mostly in the Tiger (The Sprint and Speed Triple have the same engine). Second half 2007 and all of 2008 Tigers don't appear to have the problem.
