My 2003 SM's brake light filament stopped working. The tail light filament, however, works. In order to rule out a bad bulb I got a replacement but it still does not work so I guess the problem is with the switch. Does anyone know if it's worthwhile (i.e., simple) to get the part and do it myself? If so, can someone give me an idea as to where the part is located on the bike? Could the problem be something else? Thanks

Simple question.....are the turn signals working?? If not, then the fuse is blown. If they do.....someone smarter than me will come along shortly.

Yep. The turn signals (front and rear) work.

There are two switches. One for the front lever, one for the rear. Easy enough to figure out if one is bad. Also check socket for corroded contact.

Also check the wiring beneather the bulb holder for a break (wiggle it about a little) and also the connection under the seat to make sure it is connected properly, if nescessary undo it and clean it up..

Test front and rear brake light switches individually. If neither of them work, but the turn signals do, chances are you have a bad wire connection or even a bad socket. Get a 12v test light and test each point along the wire from the fuse to the bulb.
If one works but the other doesn't, chances are it's a bad switch.

I had the same problem with my 04 Thruxton, turned out to be the pressure switch behind the right side cover. It was a very simple operation, part cost $15, my dealer had it in stock.
Just went to the garage to see where the switch is located on my 03 America. It's located behind the frame on the left side just above the exhaust directly under the battery. Check out the wire connection before buying the part.
Good Luck!

Lots of great responses. I'll follow up and report my results. I'm confident that at least one of the suggestions will solve the problem. I've been out of town, which is why my reply is so late. Thanks again.
