Pink Floyd member Richard Wright dies at age 65 Sept. 15, 2008, 11:47 AM EST LONDON (AP) -- A Pink Floyd spokesman says founding member Richard Wright has died. He was 65. Wright died Monday after a battle with cancer at his home in Britain. His family did not want to give more details about his death. The spokesman is Doug Wright, who is not related to the artist. Richard Wright met Pink Floyd members Roger Waters and Nick Mason at college and joined their early band Sigma 6. Sigma 6 eventually became Pink Floyd and Wright wrote and sang some of the band's key songs. He wrote "The Great Gig In The Sky" and "Us And Them" from Pink Floyd's 1973 "The Dark Side of the Moon." He left the group in the early 1980s to form his own band but rejoined Pink Floyd for their 1987 album "A Momentary Lapse of Reason."

He was the foundation of the band's sound, and, I think maybe my favorite of the era's keyboard stylists. You'll have to pardon me while I go listen to Echoes. A lightweight obit...

Sad indeed. Pink Floyd was always one of my favorites.. seen 'em in concert a bunch of times years back, and I think I have every album they ever put out, and some they didn't (like the Royal Philharmonic doing their stuff). I've also been following the solo efforts of Gilmore and Waters. Wright was working with Gilmore quite a bit on his solo stuff, so that will change the sound for sure. He will be missed.
Cheers, Brad

Likewise, it's very sad to hear that news...

I have them all too but didn't really like some of the early stuff. Always loved Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Gooving With a Pict but you have to play the very end of the song before to get the guy running across the room swatting the fly.

"Unnagumma". 2 CD set, the Studio version is the instrumental. Sad to hear your rock star heroes pass by. But we'll certainly have much to remember him by. I'm going to see "Several Species" on Saturday in Baltimore. They're an 11 piece Pink Floyd experience band. The last time they played Baltimore was just after Syd Barrett's death. Quote:

Sad deal indeed, I never got to see Floyd in concert, did get to see Roger Waters tour last year. I always wondered what the falling out between Waters and Wright was all about.
Favorite Floyd song... Comfortably Numb.

Also saw Waters two years ago in NYC. They played the entire Dark Side of the Moon LP with Nick Mason, incredible. Wife bought me Pink Floyd - Inside Out for Christmas this year. Great book written by Mason from his perspective. By the time "The Wall" was being recorded, they were barely speaking to each other. Waters bascially wanted all the credit for song writing, which is why the album is credited to him and "performed by Pink Floyd". This made Gilmour so mad, he never got past it. Waters has tried to make amends, but Gilmour was the hold-out. I heard him interviewed on XM about playing/writing with Waters and he replied "I haven't heard anything he's done recently that is compelling enough to work with him". Ouch. Guess it will never happen now. Sad, in this retro crazy world, they could have made millions. But they could have also tainted the memory, who knows. I do recommend the book if you are a fan. Quote:

I saw Pink Floyd at Browns Stadium when they were touring in support of Animals. Great concert, in what I would call one of the greatest lost weekends.
Currently watching PULSE, my Richard RIP.
