Was blasting through the twisties the other day and let of the throttle pretty quick,I felt something hit the inside of my leg. As i was slowing down it started popping out the left exhaust.Lost a vacuum plug! Dealer is 35 miles away. Went to local yamaha dealer in stock same exact plug Part # 16G-13569-00. Maybe this can be added to tech vault.

You can get a small assortment of vacuum caps at any auto parts store. I keep some with me all the time.

Not a bad idea about keeping some spares in stock. I learnt the hard way about how important it is to have them in good nick cos mine started to perish and there was just the slightest crack in one where air got sucked in. My speedie was pis#ing and far#ing like no one's business until I replaced them. I think from memory (don't quote me) but the squirrel condoms you get with the A1 set are good for about a year before they start disintegrating. Keep an eye on those one's peoples. Now I have really good quality ones where I continally treat with Armoral and they seem to be staying in good nick.

First thing I did when I got my new SM was to use small hose clamps to secure the vacuum caps to their posts. Haven't lost one yet.

yeah, but eventually they'll dry out and crack. The leak won't be as bad as losing them, at least at first.

I've lost track of how many times I've put on a new squirrel condom by the side of the road. Think its 3 now. But yeah there are spares in my saddle bags.Just go to nappa or auto zone or any other parts store. And buy an assortment of vacum caps. Cheap and will save you some agrivation.

Did some searching on Condoms a few days ago when this thread appeared and found a post about joining the two carbs with a rubber hose to balance out the idle. Can't get back to it....could I get an explanation or pix about where you attach the rubber hose? Do you use hose clamps or zip ties to keep the hoses in place? Thanks.

I dont know much about carbs, but I remember seeing that, dont do it. I think the hose is for balancing the carbs only, not for running the bike normally.

yes you can run a hose from the same spot you put a Squirrel Condom just put it on the same place all you will need is a hose about 6" long and run it from carb to carb and i use a hose clamp to hold it on have been using this set up for over 6 years now with out any trouble .. Ed

Like Ed said, put the hose on and leave it on. It balances the vacuum between the two carbs and gives you a smoother idle. It's also a lot harder to lose the hose than a squirrel condom. The hose that you pulled off when you stripped the AI out is perfect for this.

I've put a T-piece in my balancing vacuum tube to activate my Scott Oiler. It works real well and balances the vacuum in the carbs also.

The pic from Dinqua's site click on shows the crossover tube should be located on the same nipples as where you connect the tube for synchronising the carbs.

Thanks for the info Stacka....I figured that was the location, so went ahead and put the tube on and I must say that there does seem to be a nice beat to the idle now. Ike just arrived here, so a test ride will have to wait for a day or so .

Hate to ask this but does anyone have apic exactly where the hose is connected to each carb? Or is it the vacumn nipple that is vertical to the top of the carb? My bike has started to pop on decel, getting worse. thanks

Thansk you much. I'll change that tomorrow, mjay be that will help my popping on decel. I'll also check the other vacumn caps.
Did you notice an improvement when you connected the hose? thanks again

Can't truthfully say there is any change....cause I just don't know. I'm in the middle of a 3 stage debaffle, just added that cross over hose yesterday and Thursday my bike goes in for new jets/mains/shim. I can tell you that so far my Speedie has come to life and the new Triumph note is a joy to my ears!

Thanks again, and I apologise for all the vegtable soup typing in the previous reply. I do trust I will notice such an improvement. Thats allot of improvement from a mere cross over vacumn tube. Wonder why that is not std from the factory? My bike just today started to run a little rough at idle, but smoothed out at higher RPM. I must have some air being pulled from somewhere. I read a thread several months prior where the AMals are a real performance improvement....idle, throttle response, etc. I'll be watching to see how your enhancements prove out. Thanks again for the quick reply, Butch

Sorry I wasn't clear on my answer Butch....Because I took out 3 baffles, my bike seems to have come alive and runs quicker now. The rumble sound i've achieved is because the baffles have been removed and it's a freer flowing exhaust. The cross over hose was only put on yesterday because of knowledge gained here and I haven't tested the bike out yet with that mod done. Thursday, my dealer is going to tweak the carbs for me. I'm learning new things about my Speedie daily as I read posts here, ask questions and talk to the Guys/Gals on this great Forum. Having access to this Forum was a big factor in my purchasing a TBS. I bought my TBA with 1200 miles and Bub pipes. I now have 7K miles. Quite honestly the Bub pipes are too loud for me. I have the original stock pipes and have been reading about removing baffles. Reading other posts, I see not all stock pipes are the same; hence, baffles vary. I like a tone, but not a steady head ringer. Will tackle the decel popping first, then think a little on removing the baffles. The Triumph dealer in Johnstown PA produced a very nice tone from stock pipes, but I think he done some drilling as well. thanks Don and I trust your mods will work out, v/r, Butch

That's fine Don. I'm not sure either if it made any diff but it made sense that this should assist more even running etc Besides that though, I also needed the vacuum source for my scottoiler and it suited my needs better to take equal vacuum from both carbs.
