So my teenage son and I have a consensus of opinion on the 5 best alternative/rock tracks of my teenage years and his. In effect – tracks that close the generation gap! OLD New Rose - The Dam**d Tin Soldiers - Stiff Little Fingers The Saints are Coming - The Skids EMI - Sex Pistols Immigrant Song - Led Zeppelin NEW Men’s Needs - The Cribs I Found Out - Pigeon Detectives Take Her Back - Pigeon Detectives Fluorescent Adolescent - Artic Monkeys Chocolate - Snow Patrol All of which are on both of our ipods – strange – I would never of admitting to appreciating my old man’s music!

I'm only 1 better off at 3... snow patrol, led zep (of course), and the pistols. Admittedly I wouldn't have enjoyed my father's music either... but I have a feeling that involved people like Frank Sinatra & Glenn Miller. Rock music (and its various sub-domains) has been able to cross generations in a way not many other styles of music have.

I've heard of all the "old" but only two of the "new" is that something to do with my 15 years of a DJ though, me being 48 years young

Admittedly a British bias here but you must know more than that! The D*mned are still rockin' (with the aid of zimmer frames), The Saints are Coming was covered recently by U2 and Green Day. Stiff Little Fingers still going (Bruce Foxton - ex The Jam on bass). As for the new stuff - absolutely fantastic! Gives me hope for the next generation. There is some good new stuff coming through. My old fella was into Elvis loads of respect but not my thing. The first record I bought was an Elvis single though - Radio Radio by Elvis Costello! If I could recommed one new track it would be Men's Needs by the Cribs!

That's not too bad of an idea. I might have to load up some Frankie "blue eyes" into the iPod and go for a ride.

At 52, I find nothing wrong with still listening to that old shi- like Dead Boys, Flesh Eaters, The Dam-ed, New York Dolls, Johnny Thunders, Clash, Ramones, Black Flag, X, Pistols (and later Public Image limited), Sham 69, etc, as long as you don't forget to throw in an even dose of Johnny Cash, Lester Flatt, Country Gentlemen, John Lee Hooker, Robert Johnson, Jerry Lee Lewis, Jimmie Rodgers, and MOST importantly, and I DO MEAN MOST IMPORTANTLY, Alvin, Sara, and Maybelle Carter!!!

I dont recognize any of those "New" bands.
I remember as a kid liking a lot of my dads music. Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, The Shadows, The Beatles, Gene Vincent, the list goes on and on. He was into the Big Band sound as well, Glen Miller being his favorite. And i still like all that stuff now.

I guess the Generation Gap is alive and well. My father was 48 when I was born. I remember listening to Big Band music, polkas, Nat King Cole, Patty Page, Lennon Sisters, Bing Crosby, etc... The popular music of the wartime era. When I was old enough to care about listening to music, it was what once were known as "oldies" - the 50's and early 60's. Simple songs with great harmonies. Doowop. The Platters, the Vogues, Moonglows, Skyliners, etc.. At the same time there were the teen idols - Dion, Darrin, Fabian, Vinton, Vee. And Motown. And The Surf Sound - Beach Boys, Jan and Dean... Then the British Invasion - Stones, Beatles, Kinks, Moody Blues. Folk music - Dylan, PP&M, Baez, Kingston Trio... Then it got a bit 'eavy - Iron Butterfly, Cream, Humble Pie, Vanilla Fudge, Black Sabbath, Yes, UK, Uriah Heep, Grand Funk, Free, 10cc, Zep etc... Meanwhile, Disco kicked in and things got a little weird. Then it was hair bands, Heavy Metal, etc. Somewhere in the late 80's early 90's it just fizzled for me. Today, I still listen to music from the 40's thru the early 90's, but very little beyond that. My son listens to garbage. Rap crap and thrashing screaming garbage. I hear my dad's voice coming out of me now and then... "How can you listen to that crap? You can't even understand the words??!!" "Turn that ****** down!" That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it....

Erle, good shout!
Some great, no fantastic, artists in there. As for some classics how about:
Folsom Prison Blues - Johnny Cash Lay Lady Lay - Bob Dylan Get off of My Clould - Rolling Stones Spanish Harlem - Ben E King Summertime - Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstong
Now the last 2 don't get my sons vote but Dylan, Stones and Johnny do!
Thankfully no rap or dance in the house - no need to put a banning order - no takers with any of my tribe! Always amuses me when boy racers in the hot hatchback with blacked out windows ride past with dance music blasting out - hey look at me - I like chicks music!

I spend a lot of time listening to music on the satellite radio as I travel the dark highways of Nevada for work. I find myself listening to the music my dad played around the house when I was a kid. My 18 yoa son listens to the stuff that was popular when I was a teenager. I occasionally, when stuck in the cage with the family, listen to some of the new stuff that my wife and daughter like. I need to get my son to teach me how to put stuff on the Ipod so I can listen while I ride.

I recognized all but Pigeon Detectives, so I checked them out. Pretty cool stuff. It's great that you and your son have this bridge. I'm turning my 15 year old daughter onto all kinds of music which has been a huge part of my 45 years. But I won't be listening to any of her crap. I do however respect your son's taste in music

We are the same age - I also have a teenage daughter and to be fair she likes some good stuff but also all of the chick stuff (mainly pop) that is total pony!! The girls in the tribe are all raving about Mamamia - I would rather eat my own liver that sit through that stuff - but I think they have seen it 3 times now!!!
Glad you checked out the Pigeons - they are fantastic live!

I know all the old bands you listed and not any of the new ones. I know there is some good music out there and we have a pretty good alternative station here that I listen too. The problem is that hear a lot of stuff I like, but dont know any of the names of the bands.
My son is twelve, and luckily he likes a lot of my favorite 80's new wave and punk like the Toy Dolls, B-52's, The Clash and a bunch of others. Plus he does like the Doors, Led Zepilin and few of those other awesome late 60's early 70's bands.

Oh great... Gee Thanks.... I'm gonna have New Rose stuck in my head all day. Maybe if I put on some Adverts or Stranglers that'll help.
BTW.. how did you manage to get your list to only five? Toooo much good stuff to choose from.

You're right - already been warned! - will be cooked slightly pink and will have a glass or two of Merlot rather Chianti (much nicer I find)!!
Fact - Mamamia DVD will be secured on day one of its release and watched within minutes of arrival at the ranch. It's bound to have special features that have never been seen before!!
Once went to Le Mans 24 hour race and some guys had an adult movie with ABBA as the soundtrack - now there's a movie I highly recommed - with special features I had never seen before.

New Rose is a great track to have in your head - here's another one for your head - London's Calling - The Clash - enjoy!
These are the five each that we agree on - so some that we didn't think were great together. For example I consider Arabian Knights by Siouxsie & The Banshees to be a classic - my son mearly considers it to be ok. I know it is my fault I should be a better parent and all that but I am working on it!
