Hi all
My local electronics store sells an air/fuel ratio kit that you attach an ego sensor to. Am I able to go to the auto wreckers and use an oxygen sensor from a car ?. Im thinking this would be a good help for tuning the Speedy. The range of the air/fuel meter is 0-1volt and gives a reading in digital as well as a bar graph.
Here is the link if anyone wants to read. http://autospeed.com/cms/A_3032/article.html

No disrespect to the guy who did my last tune up but he put a sensor up the exhaust to measure the oxygen concentration me thinks.

Any input from the technically advanced here ?

Derek

Hi Derek, Staffo here from Canberra, how are ya?

Regarding putting on an air fuel sensor, I remember there was a discussion on this one but you'll need to do a search for it. From memory one of the blokes who bought one had a threaded part welded into his cross over pipe in the header pipe so he could screw the sensor in place. So that's the only impediment I think, but a little bit of stuffing around to get it sorted.

There are heaps of these air fuel ratio kits out there btw and particularly on the internet, so my suggestion would be to see what others here have to say about them and take your time. I guess you know that already anyway.

I think they are a great idea though but in discussions already a few thought that having one had the potential to drive them nuts as they would continually be watching it for changes when in fact, once a bike is properly set up there is no real need to have one unless you keep changing pipes or whatever.

Another way to make sure you have a good set up is to have a dyno done which for me in Canberra for instance cost $115. So that is another method of finding out what you bikes running like.

It's a good topic though and for me, I actually like the idea of having one just to make sure everything is ticking over nicely. Particularly lnow as our weather is just starting to warmup eh? You beauty me tinks

I also would be interested to know if any of our members have one fitted also so hopefully they'll pipe up and give us the good oil.

Cross over would be a bad location, in the header before the cross over is where you would want it.

Looking at pics of the newer EFI models you can see that the emission mandated oxygen sensors are in the header pipes right below the first bend so I'd agree with Ian on this one. The crossover would be a little more "stale" since it's not in the direct pipe flow, it mostly evens out the pressure between the two.

Hey, I'm just quoting from memory from what some other dude did. I've got no idea, but one thing I'm pretty sure of is Ian's technical knowledge.

Anyway, is there any experience you guys have of these sensors, ie good bad or ugly??? That's what Derek after I think.

Ok so I should say that I had a dyno done on my previous speedy and the sensor was just put up the end of the exhaust to measure the ratios. Im thinking that If I make a gadget from a car sensor and the electronics gizmo from the shop then I can put it up the exhaust on each side to check my setup and adjust accordingly.
Maybe its not this simple and that i just love gadgets.

I hope the dyno guy had a long probe able to get past the crossover. Vic the guy who I use here has a long probe, was kind of tough to get past the reducer cone on the gutted pipes. The cross over equalizes pressure and allows exhaust gas from 1 cyl. to escape out of both pipes so you won't get a good reading after it.

I personally would not worry if it is fore or aft of the crossover, within reasonable limits wherever you can mount the sensor is going to give a much better A/F reading than stock...
