I only have 200 miles on my new 08 America, so it's all baby steps and questions so far.

It seems to me that at 65mph and above, the engine is winding up at the high end of the RPM's already. Of course, I'm going by sound and feel, but can anyone tell me what my bike is revving at any given highway speed?

That's about right for a high perf vehicle. In fact, I've had several cars that wound up to 5500-6000 at highway speeds. My favorite was a highly modified 396 Vette that got about 8 MPG cruising at 55. It could smoke both back tires at that speed with a downshift to 3rd. Used to scare the cr&p outta the other cagers.

Ok, a bit OT here, but---Quincy, Mass----- you gotta be kiddin me. I grew up in Quincy, went to QHS just off the square. Hung around down the Neck a lot, lived in Quincy Point near the shipyard. I was just up there in August. So what part of Quincy do you live in?

Hey! Well, I'm pretty new to Quincy, been here for the last four years. My wife and I bought that new house on stilts at Parkhurst-Perry beach, next to the former Bayswater Boatyard, bet you know which house I'm talking about. Nice place and good people around here, but I won't be fully accepted by the Neckers until I've been here for maybe a hundred years or so....

I changed my front sprocket to drop my rpms. My '03 Speedmaster runs 80 mph @ about 4000 rpms. Plenty of room left.
Also, (OT again) my family is from Quincy,Weymouth and Braintree and yeah, that's a real cool house you've got.
Welcome aboard

Thanks for the welcome and the info. Most of my cruising experience has been on a Susie Boulevard with much taller gears, I guess. And a tach.

How come all you guys are moving out of Quincy? Is there something I should know?

We like it here. The beach is steps away, which our Black Lab George loves, Norwood Airport is close, plenty of decent restaurants and bars around. Yeah, the house is cool, in a way...being on stilts, it tends to sway a bit in the high winds during a storm, and of course, during storms the entire property except the front door and driveway is under water...lots of water.

I agree. Just went with the 19 tooth front sprocket. Easy install and around $30 for the sprocket. Drops around 300RPM at 75mph and doesn't feel like you need a sixth gear. Not really noticable at the low end unless you really like perfoming hole shots at every light.

There are many posts on sprocket changes.

For your information:

07 (865) Speedie (18/42 sprockets)

1st gear: 5mph/1000rpm
2nd gear: 10mph/1000rpm
5th gear: 20mph/1000rpm

(These are approx.)

So, 60 in 2nd= 6k rpm
60 in top= 3k rpm

Rev limiter kicks in about 8k rpm.
