P Diddy is whining that he has recently been subjected to the ignominious requirement of having to fly commercial airlines instead of on his private jet. He pleads with his 'Saudi brothers' to drop oil prices and provide him with free 'oil' (I'm pretty certain he meant Jet A), so he could return to his former lifestyle and not 'have to mingle with the less talented unwashed in first class' (my words, but I'm pretty certain that's what he's whining about, IMHO).

I was sitting in an office waiting room several days back, and I picked up a copy of a magazine which caters (panders?) to the interests of those high end folks with the means to buy super yaghts. I was leafing through this magazine looking at all the fantabulously appointed private ships and came to the back where the classifieds were. One of the ads stated that a particular ginormous floating palace had a fuel capacity of 94,000 gallons of diesel oil. My question is why isn't fuel oil taxes on an escalating scale for these examples of ultimate indulgence? While we are concerned about fuel conservation, CO2 emissions, and other concerns of common folk, there are still those who buy and cruise around on boats the size of an island and burn up fuel at an ungodly rate for their own personal indulgences. I applaud those who can make money and be as successful as possible, but this type of overindulgence in this day and age should be looked at carefully and possibly curtailed through the use of taxation and other 'conservation' fees.

We were having lunch in La Connor, WA last May. A brand new off the showroon floor, very large (180'??) yacht was docked, while a crew of six washed windows, the hull etc. A security guard was parked nearby keeping riffraffraff on Triumph motorcycles from approaching too close. He said it cost around $30m, and was leaving for Florida via the Panama Canal in the morning.

Myself, being less ostentatious, prefer to motor about on a simple vertical twin m/c or eight year old GMC pickup. It keeps the rabble from rousing.

An old veterinarian who lived a simple life in a simple home next door to my grandparents, bequethed a million dollar++ scholarship endowment to the local high school at his passing. Every graduating senior headed off to secondary education has received a significant monetary award for the past 15 years. It's a remarkable story, as a grade schooler, he used to take me along on local fishing expeditions in his old Jeep

Guess that's another way of looking at things, although the filthy rich just don't seem to eat as many burgers as we'd like...

I make my own living as a direct result of those persons and corporations who have the means to own business jet aircraft, and I appreciate that fact. However, most of the folks who own these jets are low key and use them in a reasonable and discrete fashion as secure tools to conduct their business affairs. They don't flaunt their wealth or publicly whine when they have to curtail their use. As far as 'upper class' goes, that is as much a description of culture, education, and public responsibility as much as it is money. I don't think P Diddy qualifies as 'upper class.' He's more lower class who happens to be wealthy and is a whiner when he can't use his toys.

its pretty nuts to see him of all people pinching pennys. Hes not exactly a low man on the totem pole, hes making his money off the entertainers. So im curious to see how the people out there earning HIS money are doing. Rap is in a slump right now and not exactly bringing in the bacon. So im assuming hes living off of his clothing lines and endorsements of just being a celebrity.

Can't say that I blame him.
Commercial air travel makes me wanna whine too.
For those of us of larger than petite size,
modern air travel is like a cattle car with wings.

Hey Martin, as a old retired airline employee, I may be slighty qualified to answer your question about "who designed those seats".

Here's your answer: The Market "designed" those seats.

For you see, once the country back in '79 decided that they wanted an airline system unincumbered with governmental oversight in order for the airline carriers to compete in more of an aggressive manner against each other and thus keep the price of those airline seats as low as possible, then the airlines eventually found it wise to pack as many people into each airplane as much as possible in order to attempt to make some moolah!

In other words...the american public for the most part didn't wish to shop, or figured they couldn't afford to shop at "Macy's" anymore, and so the "Walmartization" of the airline industry is now the norm.

We got exactly what we wanted! Isn't it wonderful when things "work out", HUH?!

(BTW....welcome aboard)

At the marina where the boat is docked they have several of the big yachts (not super yachts, just big yachts) come in. The general rule of thumb is annual operating cost is %10 of cost at purchase. This includes crew, fuel, dockage, maintenance etc.
One of the 140' had a range of 800nm on 10,000 gallons. To go fuel up, 60 mile round trip, marina to closest port where a fast speed fuel pump is located (who wants to wait to take on 5-8k gallons of fuel at the speed of your local gas station) it would cost arround $3000 just to move the boat to spend $40k in fuel. I'm glad I don't own a boat, too ****** expensive.
Tommorrow I have to fuel up 'my' boat. Its $5.72 at my marina, $4.60 next port over. I think I will sail to the next port over and save $100.
