First lower body, now the upper. Yesterday I did a really awesome, and long (500 mile for me), ride and my right shoulder started giving me problems. Some of my fellow riders may have seen me moving it around on the ride. However, it didn't really get bad until the way home. The shoulder and shoulder blade got extremely sore. And 3 or 4 times on the way home I got a very sharp pain (almost pin-point like) in my shoulder blade.
I never had anything remotely like this on my 07 America, but I'm finding my new(er) 05 is far from the same bike. The only thing I can think is handlebar position. The feel to be in about the same spot, but I can understand on longer runs that being in a slightly different position can make a huge difference. Is there a set position for the bars leaving the factory? Plus I'm not sure if moving the bars back or moving slightly forward would alleviate future pain.
Or I could just be a big 'ol wuss. I'll do some additional research online, but your inputs and experience is definately welcome!

riding to GA two years ago (1300 miles each way)John (big poppy) and I had the same issue...due to the extended time of riding (22 1/2 hours the first day) the "ice pick" took almost 1 year to remove from my left shoulder...John has changed the risers (I'm still looking for the right pair) and has had no further issues...but it is definitely ride position related!

After a 500 mile day, lots of things and places might hurt. If you are not used to spending long hours in the saddle

I fully understand that. Still, I've riden many hours and more miles on the 07 without even a hint of an ache. Granted, I haven't been in the saddle for two months, but this seems a bit extreme.
At some point I'll get off my lazy rear, or get on it depending how one looks at it, and research some via the net.

i used to get that too untill i got jims spacers and adjusted my bars ever so slightly. it often dont take much in the way of moveing up or down but a slight adjustment can alter the effects of a long ride.  you might want to try moveing them just a little bit at a time up or down untill you find the sweet spot. i marked with a sharpie on the riser and the bar and worked from that starting point, just a little at a time

Sounds like a case of what we used to call 'mouse shoulder'. Loosen the riser clamps to a light friction on the bars and try tilting them up or down. The ideal would be to be able to raise your forearms straight from the elbows parallel to the ground and lay your hands on the grips.

(okay...comedy bit over...here's my REAL problem folks...well, beside all these oblivous mental problems that is.....)
Before the SWTF run of about 330 miles from Prescott to The Grand Canyon this past May, I removed the original handgrips off my BA and put on those Kuryakyn "Iso-Grips". And ever since that ride, by right elbow has been KILLING ME!!! And, now it especially hurts whenever I play tennis.
And so...do you folks possibly think it could be these wider around grips that could be causing this pain?? And has anybody else around here started getting new little aches and pains in a new location after installing different handgrips on their bike???

I have the same "shoulder blade pain" sometimes. I put pull backs on the BA, and that helped a little. Then, I noticed that the pain gets me sometimes now on my old Triumph, the one that has been perfect for more than ten years! Nuts! I think that maybe it's not rider position or other ergonomics, but the dreaded "old man" disease. Nuts!

I'm going to a chiropractor for this same problem, but it started in my neck and moved down to my shoulder. I figured it was stress from work and that's what my regular doctor said it was. I have a set of risers on order and should be in tomorrow. I'll let you know if they help.

Works for me as a remedy and prevention for joint pain.

Thanks. I may have to look into this if my elbow condition doesn't eventually improve on it's own, though I've never been big on taking any sorts of pills.

All nutritional supplements, not meds. GNC for good quality. Yeah, I know the whole pill thing has bad vibes. I think you can get them in powders to mix in juice, or ready mixed for that matter, but $$$. Mary Baker Eddy proud of you? Well, maybe half way

As to factory alignment of the handlebars - there is (according to the manual) a "pinch mark" on the bars that is to be aligned with the rear mating seam of the handlebar clamps. That being said, the more relaxed of a riding position you can achieve, the less pain you will feel. So if moving the bars helps, go for it. Just watch the clearances and the level of the brake reservoir.
The Glucosamine, etc. supplements help, but a lot of times shoulder pain originates in the neck. Just wearing a helmet and pushing through the wind puts a strain on your neck.. If you are tense or stressed that multiplies the effect.
I've had that ice pick in my shoulder pain too, but never from riding my bike. If I'm going on a long ride I take 2 Aleve's before I a-leave....
Aleviates a lot of the aches and pains of sitting in one position for a long time.

Dwight, I play recreational competitive tennis... I had tennis elbow before... it happens because your racket's weight is too light, very common these days with the light materials they use in rackets now. The solution is a head heavy racket; when the ball hits the racket your arm will not absorb the energy and vibration as much. If you do not want to spend any cash on a new racket then go to a tennis shop and buy lead tape. You can add pieces of this tape to both sides of your racket's head and add some weight to it. You never know, it might help your elbow pain while riding as well. I did this to see if my tennis elbow was racket weight related... it was, I then bought a head heavy racket and the pain has not returned.

Thanks Angel. Some good points there. I wonder if this could be some from of delayed development, as up until about a year ago I was using a much head-heavier racket than I am now.
But what's really got me stumped here is that after using this lighter headed racket(a Wilson Hammer 5.3) for almost a year now, it wasn't until I swapped the handgrips on my BA to those "Iso-Grips" and then rode the SWTF rally run(330 miles in one day) this past May when this elbow started giving me trouble!???
And so, that's why I asked that question about if these wider around grips have had any negative effects upon anybody else around here.
Though as you infer, it could be just that the cumlative effects of using this lighter headed racket has finally caught up with me, and so maybe I should head to the Pro Shop and buy some lead tape and see if that might help.

whatdayaknow, yesterday had practice, the strings on my heavy racket broke, pickup my back up, a Hammer 6.3 (light racket. After practice my elbow and shoulder were hurting.
Now I need to go to the pro shop get my racket restrung.
Moral of the story, your back up racket should be THE SAME!
Anyway, I'll be getting those ISO grips, I hope they work out for me.
