Just got back from a round-trip to Watkins Glen, NY...I'll post details later...
But, stopped for gas yesterday morning and when I punched the starter button to leave, the headlight dimmed but nothing happened. Finally jumped ther starter to the positive side of the battery and she did start. Conditions were wet and lots of fog and rain.
She's all dried out (me too) but still won't crank.
any and all ideas appreciated...a wiring diagram would also help.

First would be to check your fuses.Have you tried jumping the solenoid? From what you describe that's a good possibility. I would also clean all electrical connections to the battery and the frame ground. Clean the connections at the solenoid and starter post. With rainy conditions I would also suspect the kick stand switch , never personally had an issue with it but I have seen here others who have.

Glad you made it back safely Steve . You know I was having starting issues the other week. I wound up replacing the battery and cleaning and greasing every connector I could find, and it's fine now. That would be a good place to start.
I'm heading to the beach for the long weekend. If you're still having trouble when I get back , I will try to help you get it figured out.

Thank you for the comments. Checked the fuse by the side of the road. Don't think its the battery because it cranks and starts with a wire from the pos side to starter. Will be checking relays...most likely something between start button and starter...still could use a wiring diagram.

If this doesn't help PM me and I'll scan a new copy. http://members.optusnet.com.au/~matt_l/tridocss_files/circuit_diagram%20001.jpg
I'd have a look at the handlebar switch anyway since you got all wet and everything...
