Dumb question, I guess, but, why is it that the TORs that work for carbeurated models are not appropriate for the EFI models? I thought (incorrectly, apparently) that these were essentially just a baffled/glasspacked chamber that you bolt onto the headers. Why would it matter whether or not the fuel system is injected?

Well I know that the EFI's have O2 sensors to calibrate the mixture but those are located on the header pipes. So im assuming the newer pipes have a catalytic converter in them now or something to work with the 02 sensors in some way.

asked them about it today. the headers are a different diameter. i'm currently waiting for the TOR pipes that are specific to the 09 models now...

What is the diameter of the new headers? They aren't 1 3/4" anymore?

That would really suck if they went and changed the dia., that would seriously limit options.I wonder if the older headers would still work on them if you welded a port in for the ox sensor.

i wish i could tell you the header diameter, but without a set of calipers on hand, i don't think i can do that. i'm only going by what the shop told me. i had ordered a set of shorts for the 09 i just picked up, and they said that they have the pipes ordered, but they're not in. they had oodles of the the older TORs around, but because of the diameter change, i just have to hold my breath. they were pretty sure that by the time i need my 500 mile service, the new pipes would be in.
as for old headers on the new bike, it'd probably work, but then i'd think you'd have to doodle around with making sure the sensor was correct in attachment and reading. that may be a pain. bigger challenge than i would personally make, but then i'm not really a gearhead either.

I bet the diameter change has got to be because of the o2 sensors. Maybe the length that it penetrates into the pipe. They wouldnt just change the diameter for no reason.

I am going to be stopping by my dealer today. I'll ask them about that and see if they tell me the same story. I have a feeling that the headers are the same diameter, but it may be a matter not having the right mapping in their computers. I'll find out.

by the way tim, if you get a measurement of the circumference of the pipes we'd be able to figure out the diameter of the piping. You can wrap a piece of string or tape around the header and then take the measurement of the length and calculate the diameter.

probably not perfectly accurate, because the string i used was a little bulky, and i didn't take a marker down with me, so i had to make wonky cuts to mark it. but, circumference of the exhaust pipes, right after the header junction, was approx 5.75" --> ~1.75" diameter. the headers are larger in diameter, and then they taper immediately before the exhaust junction. so, maybe my dealer was just not wanting to put them on....

OK... I talked to my dealer today. here is the deal. you can use older pipes on the new bikes, the problem is trying to map it properly since at the moment there is not a pre-made map for the older TORs (and after market pipes). Maybe that is something that will change as people start to mod the FI bikes, people/dealers can share maps.

btw, how would one go about remapping the efi anyway? wouldn't you need some sort of doohickey to hook the thing up to a computer with the appropriate software? or am i overthinking this thing...

The new EFI bikes have a massive Cat inside each pipe, I would say very hard to remove. I have fitted a pair of Tor's on my speedy and this makes me wonder if this is why I keep getting that clicking sound.. The stealer is supposed to of re-tuned the ECU to accept the Tor's. There is no difference in the size of the pipes.. Hope this helps, you guys in the US have all this to come

Yes, the factory has a pre-made map for the new pipes.

Yes, you have to hook up a computer (with the Triumph software) to the bike and load the map into the ECM. In order to create a new map for a set-up that they do not have a configuration for, they would have to put it in the dyno and keep playing with the mapping until it was right. It could take several hours or more.

As a result it will have a charcoal canister for evap emissions. You may be hearing the canister purge solenoid working which is perfectly normal.
