Okay, I do NOT intend to make this sound political; it's entirely about oratorial talent. Regardless of what you think about his politics or personal weaknesses, Bill Clinton remains one of the most talented speakers of our lifetime. The speech he gave at the Demo convention last night was a masterpiece of oratory and rhetoric comparable to JFK's and Reagan's best efforts. The phrase "Better for us to use the power of our example than the example of our power" has to be one of the most memorable lines I've heard any politician use in recent memory. The guy has an amazing charisma when speaking publicly.

I agree. I was getting a little tired of hearing from Bill and Hillary in recent weeks, but he did give an excellent speech last night.

+1, heck of a good line, and a very good speech. On the other hand, and without rancor, more like resignation, I'm old enough to remember, and really tire of hearing all of the same old things from politicians, in general. My favorite, in a local campaign from this area, is..." Joe Blow is going to go to Washington and bring about change in how things work there".

I dont get down on much speeches but isnt that structured pretty similar to the JFK speech?

Or is this a normal formula for speeches in politics?

Yep, Tom! That's pretty much the standard formula ALL the Politicos are usin' nowdays on BOTH sides of the ol' aisle.
In fact, anyone can purchase that formula today at their local Barnes and Noble. Just go to the Self Help Section there and look for the book, "Speeches FOR Dummies"!!!
(...and now every time you watch one of those mind-numbingly assinine political ads on TV, with which you're sure to soon be bombarded, you'll now know where they got all their ideas!!!)

Personally I am a way bigger fan of Peggy Noonan (Ronald Reagan's speechwriter). The "Boys of Pointe du Hoc" speech, given at Normandy for the 40th anniversary of D-Day was brilliant.
RR was probably the last time I was really impressed with a presidential speech...it's all gone to sound bites now.
And my favorite line will always be the one about the most terrifying thing you can hear is "I'm from the government and I'm here to help" (RR)
Consider how our politicians speeches have declined in quality over the years...I'm betting most of you can remember at least the first sentence of FDR's radio address on 7 Dec 1941, but who can remember even one line from GWB's speech on 11 Sep 2001?

Yep Sarge! I guess the phrase, "those Evil-doer" just doesn't quite have the same ring to it as "A day which will live in infamy", does it???!!!
