So my OLD coolpix needed to be replaced, the battery compartment broke and the lens is kinda blurry so after some research and the blessing of my wife (with some reluctance since she is a Nikon fan and pro photographer) we ordered a new Canon Powershot S870IS. Now I'll be able to put that camera in my front jacket pocket and take it with me wherever I go and start documenting rides and what not. So, post your camera experiences here and what you carry, maybe we can help other folks make up their minds in the future. I'll post more about the 870IS here once I get it.

Well the pictures I just put up. Were taken with some kind of "Low end" poloroid.It does what i want it to do. Battery life (2 AA's) seems to be good for about 50 pictures without flash.Says it will take videos but have not tried that.Internal storage sucks, can only hold about 8 hi/res pics without SD card.

only camera i have now is a DSLR, an olympus e-500, and a couple of lenses.

I was looking into a compact that can shoot RAW but they all cost 500 or more. I'm a casual user so I leave the DSLR to the photographer of the house.

Some people claim to shoot 400 pics with the 870IS but I take that with skepticism... will se once I put it through its paces.

there are a lot of really nice pas cameras out there (not to be confused with POS, lol). raw is going to take a lot of space, regardless of what type you choose. if you want space, compact flash is a good format to see if the camera has (not essential mind you, just handy), because it's fairly inexpensive, so you can have several of them.

the lens is going to probably be the most important part of your camera. nice camera, turd lens = turd photo. turd camera, nice lens = decent photo.

I've been shooting a Canon Rebel SLR (35mm)for about 6 years and a Sony DSC-F707 (Digital) for 5. The Canon is a great film shooter and the Sony has been more than adequate.... Until now. I've been doing odd commercial jobs and find that the Sony lacks the resolution needed (It's 5 meg vs. 12 meg) for some of the jobs I've taken. I'm looking at the Canon 40D, mainly because I respect the brand, but the 1/8000 shutter speed really helps with the action shots.

Jack, my wife has had the opposite experience dealing with Nikon on the repair (under warranty) of one of her lenses. They also repaired the D70 she has but that DSLR has never been the same after she accidentally dropped it. She now has a D300 and the the D70 with some lenses, lights etc... Sometimes she rents specialty lenses from an online store, if you all want I can find out where, apparently it is real affordable for 1 month rental. The lenses are shipped on Pelican cases too. The last lens she rented was a Tilt lens... To me Nikon has superior optics but their PAS have fallen behind somewhat.

That cranefly looks awesome, really sharp. I can't wait to get my PAS.

Just got the camera yesterday, took it today for some tests and I came up with this testing the digital macro.

I put this camera in my front jacket pocket and I didn't even feel it while riding... oh yes, there is lots of riding and lots of photos coming

now that's a pretty slick image. i may have to make one of those myself
