we ordered a new Canon Powershot S870IS.

I have owned at least two dozen Nikon film bodies and three to four times that many Nikkor and third party Nikon lenses. Last year, I sent one of my mint F100s to the El Segundo service center, and they absolutely butchered it. I mean, it came back looking like a high school shop project. El Segundo was extremely uncooperative, and Nikon in NY (corporate office) wouldn't even reply to a hard copy complaint that I sent certified mail. No apology, no rebuttal, nothing. In the end, I got credit against the charges from my credit card company, but still lost money due to the devaluation of the camera.

That turned out to be the year I went digital, and guess what? I now own a large kit of brand new Canon digital gear and have sold nearly all my Nikon bodies and lenses. You can believe I will never, ever buy anything made by those SOBs, and that includes the Fujifilm DSLR system (which was otherwise high on my list of desirable gear).

Funny, I just read in the Wall Street Journal that Nikon is under intense pressure to recover from recent losses. Seems large numbers of consumers making the move to digital are choosing Canon. Such a shame.

Anyway, you've made the right choice. Image quality of the Canon P&S line is really superb, and if you ever need it, their customer support is excellent.

Happy shooting!
