I'm pretty new to motorcycling, and could use the voice of experience. What tools should be in a toolkit to carry on the bike?

A-Number-1 priority: Full set of metric Allen wrenches. They're small and cheap, and absolutely invaluable.
After that, a metric wrench set would be nice, and a Leatherman/Gerber tool for all the other stuff.

I think everyone will have a different opinion as to what NEEDS to be in the toolkit, so I'll just tell you what I've got in my toolkit.
Spark plug wrench Screwdriver with inter-changeable philips and flathead tips ( from the Cruz metric set) screwdriver ratchet with several tips floating around Lots of tiewraps 5 Allen wrenches of various sizes Crescent wrench Vise Grips 3/8" ratchet 1/4" ratchet 10mm, 8mm, 7mm, 6mm, 5mm Combination wrenches Electrical Tape 1/4" drive wiggle-head attachment various 1/4" to 3/8" and vice versa adapters. Various metric sockets
All of this is crammed into the toolkit that comes with the freak, and I'll admit that alot of the stuff is 7mm which is what the carburetor screws on my bike are. With the tools in my kit, I can pull the spark plugs, re-jet the carburetor, take the corbin saddle and luggage rack off, reset the handlebar and controls if I drop the bike and the stuff gets knocked out of wack, adjust my windvest if that get's knocked out of adjustment somehow, and also tighten up a good share of the fasteners around the bike.

Hey, what's wrong with the full complement of tools located inside the ignition cover?

I keep a small box of tools in the garage on strip-alert and a cell phone on my person.
My wife brings me the tools when I summon her.

I bought a 2004 Speedmaster from a local dealer & they told me the bike does not come with a toolkit. Can anyone confirm that?. Thanks in advance.

Heh, come with the bike? Hell no. Honestly, I didn't even get the owners manual when I got my bike -- had to go back and ask for one! Haha.
The one thing they ALL should come with is an allen wrench inside the side cover to take off the saddle (the Bonnies have one, the Speedys don't).

I have the freak but do not use the provided toolkit because my Corbin seat is such a pain to remove.

Did you look inside the cover to the fuse box? There should be an allen wrench in there to take off the seat. At least there's one in mine.

I got the FULL toolkit, afull allen wrench with optional long and short reach ends!!! Mind you dont like the design of the "toolbox" as it filled up with water 1/4" deep and rusted 50% of my useable tools!!!! Soon cured the problem with a 1/8" drill bit, don't tell my insurance as I haven't notified them of the "modification" Cheers Mike

A packet of allen wrenches, a sparkplug socket (do a forum search for this, most standard ones won't work) a ratchet and 3 or 4 inch extension, a regular size interchangable tip screwdriver, a small screwdriver for tweeking the carbuettors to allow for altitude changes and wrenches for adjusting the chain. I also carry a can of chain spray and a quart of cheap 20W-50 oil in case I feel sorry for a Harley oe leadwing rider on the side of the road. The phone that usually stays switched off in my pocket and my AAA (RAC in the UK) card cover everything else.

Great info, folks. I really appreciate it. I carry a cell, too, but there's lots of places in the Colorado mountains with no service. Guess its tough to fit a canyon with towers. The wife based toolkit might work in a pinch, but I think its better to carry a few essentials.
I was a little surpised nothing came with the bike. Well, except the sophisticated seat removal tool. Even the old Honda Nighthawk I bought used a while back had a tool kit.

I carry the basics listed above, also a 15/16" combination wrench to loosen the rear wheel nut to adjust the chain. I don't know what 15/16" converts to in mm, but it fits. A little 6-8 mm ratcheting wrench to adjust the chain tensioner bolts and a tire air gauge. I also carry an extra qt of 20-50 oil, but have never had to use it.

If I carried all the tools I wanted to, I would exceed the weight limit and space in my saddlebags.... So far, 9,000 miles, have never needed any.....Do like to have a cell phone and a credit card when on the long road....
