Hmmm....doesn't sound promising for me, as i intended to do it with them on the bike and by hand and a dremel possibly and with semichrome polish. If it was that tough with them removed and a wheel i may not get much of a result. I wonder if the reason it took so much for you is that the wheel had to polish out the tooling marks the shrouds have that have that lathed look? If so, i might be able to get past that by sanding with about #2000 wet and dry before polishing.
