Received a flyer from Hardley. Free Harley! At 50mpg, your brand new Harley will pay for itself. How'd you like to put money in your pocket, instead of the gas tank? Well ditch the Dodge, stow the Suburban and hop on a Harley--and let it pay for itself! When you're getting 50 MPG, you save 700 gallons of gas a year*. And at 4 bucks a gallon, that's $2800! Enough to make the monthly payments of $233 on a new Harley Big Twin! *Bases on average Harley mileage of 50 mpg and 15,000 miles driven per year. Okay. I need to puke. Excuse me. Ahh all betterer now. What hardley rider rides 15,000 miles a year? Do you drive your motorsickle? I rides mine.

OK.. so which hardly supposedly gets 50 mpg and what are they comparing it to for the savings? Saving 700 gallons a year over what?

Ha! I ride pretty much every day and still only hit around 12K a year in commuter miles (more miles, but some of those are just for the sake of riding). The gas savings are nice, but it is the business mileage deduction and the fact that it will let me keep my cars longer with no payment that make financial sense. But hey, folks are asking for my vote based on gas prices, why not ask my to buy a Harley?

My ole dodge gets about 9mpg if I go 45mph.

I put 16,264 miles on Cinnamon Girl the first year I owned her. Make that 18,193 since July 31, 2007. That's not counting Vera Lynn either. For anyone, especially hardely folks, to ride that many miles in a year is just plain crazy. You can call home and ask my wife too.

My Ford F 150 gets 9 MPG. My new Speedy gets somewhere around 45 to 50 if I keep off the throttle. I was spending $500 a month for gas on the truck before the gas hit $4 a gallon. In march I bought the triumph. The payments are $185. Insurance $45. Gas $125. Total cost to ride Speedy is $355 opposed to $500. You do not need to be a brain surgeon to figue it out. The truck has not moved in two months. I keep it for major shopping and to pull my trailer only. You will be surprised at how much stuff I can carry on my bike with saddlebags and a rear luggage rack.
07 Speedmstr, Long Tors, bags, sissy bar and rack, windshield, engine bars, 2 ww lights, 2 fast eddy stickers and a .45 ACP.

Along with my America, I also own a 1975 Harley FL. It gets around 40 miles per gallon, and thats a 4speed 30 year old bike. The new harleys other than the v-rod and sporters are all six speed, my brothers Road King gets fifty miles per gallon. Oh by the way. I live in Michigan and I ride around 17000 miles a year.

Okay okay, Moe. I think see your point here, but I don't think there's any reason to cop an attitude! I mean, can't you see that by showing all those facts and figures in that ad that they're just tryin' to appeal to those potentially new Harley-Davidson customer's sense of "insightful comprehension" here??? (oh...wait a minute...NOW I think I see your point here, dude!!!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

What a bunch of hooey!!! Most of the Harley owners where I work won't ride if there's even a chance of rain in the forecast. They'd have to ride a new HD for the next thirty years just to break even. Gimme a break!!

Nobody buys a Hardley or a Triumph to save money as the primary reason. They buy it to ride and enjoy the adventure of motorcycles. Guys may tell their wives its for the savings.

Both Lazyrider and Satxron are right, at least about the new Harley riders(Owners) and about conning the wife. Not the biggest lie I ever told her

My wife let me get a T595, actually begged me, to get a sports bike after I left details of my life insurance laying around the house. Can't think why though

False economy if you ask me. What they fail to mention is the cost of the trailor to keep the HD in, and the cost of the truck you need to tow the trailor to the HD rallies.

Harley big twins are EPA rated at 53 MPG highway and Sportsters at 57 MPG. So, their 50 MPG claim is reasonable. My diesel truck is large and heavy and has 4WD, so it gets around 16 - 17 MPG according to the monitor display. When the weather is decent, I ride 18 miles to work and back 5 days a week and put on another 200 - 300 on weekend rides and some more running errends. Seems to me their claims are possible if a little optimistic.
For many years I rode rain or shine, even in snow a few times. I no longer have to so I don't, not on the HD or the Triumph.

Hi Ron,
I doubled the mileage on Cinnamon Girl in one year, so I guess that makes her mine now? Anyways, I told the mrs. that I needed Sceptres back in 2003 in order to ride the mountains two up. Cinnamon Girl does is bone stock. Garage ornaments are what most motorsickles become when bought for the wrong reasons. Passion is the true reason to buy a motorsickle. Riding along in a cage just has no soul.

Greybeard, I don't dispute the mpg claims, only the assertion that the 88 inch iron steeds will be ridden 15,000 miles a year. Without the facts, kinda like a seat of the pants feel, I think that only about 20% of motorsickles get ridden hard and put up wet.

I think that 20% is inflated...according to the NHTSA, the average registered motorcycle gets ridden around 1900 miles per year.
That's against over 12,000 miles per registered car too.

The average miles per year is just under 3k per a dealer I know. If you look at Craigslist, cycletrader etc. Most of the bikes are averaging about 3k/ It is common to see, even here, 2003 models with 10k or less.
This board is like most riders. A lot of garage art laying around. I bought my 05 in December of 05. 2.5 years and it only has 20k. Granted, it is not the only seat in the garage but I think I only ride about 15k a year.

20% was wishful thinking. 1900 miles per year. Dang. Those folks must change their oil due to age not mileage and their tires due to dry rot. Still, having a motorsickle in the garage and not ridding it is betterer than not having one at all. To me though it is like Christmas eve every night. Always waiting for the sun to rise so I can open my presents. When the truth of Santa Clause is known I'll be six feet under. Or my ashes will be blown all over the Dude.

I'm glad nobody rides much...I've never purchased a new bike...I've never seen any reason to.
My America was 2 years old with 1500 miles on it...paid $6000 vs $8000 new. My Thruxton was 2 years old with 4000 miles on it...paid $5000 vs $8000 new. My VFR was 2 years old with 1000 miles on it...paid $7700 vs $11,000 new.

AMEN! I am the same with cars. Example.
I drive a Jaguar XJ8. Off the showroom floor it was $68,000. I brought it when it was 42 months old, with a little under 40,000 miles on the clock. A fully certified Used Jag from Jaguar of Chattanooga and I paid $23,000 for it. Tell me thats not a bargain.
I'm a very happy cager

You'll notice they use a lot of ifs in that ad. However, with the present cost of fuel, 2 wheel traffic in general is increasing a lot. I wouldn't be surprised to see Cushman add general purpose scooters back into their industrial vehicle lineup if present trends continue. Maybe someone in Glendale CA will even revive the Mustang "motorcycles".

The revival of the Mustang sure would be kind'a cool alright, GB! I always did like the looks of those little suckers. (but 5'll get cha 10 that if somebody DOES revive it, the factory won't be in any suburb of Los Angeles anymore....I'm thinkin' maybe it'd be located in a suburb of BANGKOK instead, unfortunately)
