I'm reasonably sure this has been covered elsewhere (though not sure if it was answered).

Are there any 'local' suppliers of exhausts such as Bubs, Speciality Spares etc or is it an import only solution?

Equally, given our wacky noise regulations, are there any non stock exhausts that sound louder/deeper but are within the mumble mumble limits?

I suspect (given what i've read) that Bubs will give me a softer sound (that wont encourage Her Majesty's Bacon Force to pull me over) but am always interested in other peoples experience (especially those based in the UK).

If you are still on the standard exhausts I recon it would be a bit quiet.

I find the Triumph short off road loud enough for me and not loud enough to draw attention of the coppers.

you sometimes get other exhausts up on ebay.

Unfortunately, the Triumph cruisers aren't very well represented over here so you're pretty much limited to debaffling the stock pipes, TORS or something custom-made.

I think most of the UK riders that frequent this forum have TORS and they're fine; I've never had any undue attention from those in blue. (Not for the pipes, at least!!! )

My mate rides round on a bright-yellow, custom Hog with straight-thru drag pipes and he's never had a problem. (He's also got a wholly-illegal, 3"x2" black-and-white no. plate.) He's either very lucky or cops aren't too fussed about cruisers.)

If you want to debaffle the stock pipes, do a search for 'bafflectomy'. If you want to go the custom-pipe route, it needn't be as expensive as you may think.

Went on down to the dealership yesterday and some shiny new ones are in the region of 250 - 270 quid (can't remember exactly).

to get some Bubs brought over would probably cost the same though maybe?

though the guys at the dealership concurred that the TORS aren't likely to get PC Plod too over excited part of me has the perception (or misconception perhaps) that the Bubs might produce a better sound?

having never heard either close up, it's an opinion based on no facts whatsoever!

so i suppose i'd ask

anyone around my neck of the woods with TORS?

what are peoples perceptions of the TORS vs Bubs (etc) both in terms of sound quality and oinkability

i know the X vs Y exhaust has been done to death but i think it boils down to "import or not import" for me

...plus...i'm avoiding working

What sort of area do you live in? I'd go for a bit more volume but I live in a 15 house cul-de-sac and the neighbours would not appreciate anything more than TORS. If you think you can get away with it, take a gamble and go for something different. If it doesn't work out, I'm sure someone will swap with you.
I got this information comparing relative volumes of various pipes from TRat.net. It was written by our very own Pat (Dinqua); I hope he doesn't mind me reprinting it here:

(This is one persons opinion.)

Don't forget, you're not just limited to pipes made for our bikes, you just need to match up the pipe diameter where the header meets the silencer. (Do a search for the size.)

Or just debaffle the stock pipes.

I have SS pipes, and in the last year havent had a single second glance from PC plod. Riding in th country, or in the city every day (past many police)
They are loud but not out of control. Ordered them from Dale at Speciality spares. Cost about £180 incl import dutys. have no complaints at all.
search You tube for ''triumph america speciality spares'' and see my short clip there. Also posted a stock pipes clip so you can see the difference.

that was the single best purchase i made for this bike.

But seriously, the guys going - you'll hear all types of exhaust, from those with stock to Grzegorz with the loudest...and most in between. That way you can make your own mind up.

I'm in the debaffled camp - and the 03 passed her MOT last year with them. Anything louder and it would need changing - but you'd have 2 years for that!

Definately tempted, i come back from Germany on Saturday (Oktoberfest) morning so i'll have to see how broken i am before i make the ride up there.

sounds like you're right though, best way for me to get any real appreciation of them is to actually hear them up close

that being said, if i am too knackered (read:drunk) to ride up saturday morning i might see about either swinging up in the evening or intercepting one of you guys as you journey back down south if the timings work out right (and you're cool with that).

being a reasonably new rider i'd like to find a sound that is deep (not necessarily loud) but doesn't necessarily make people focus on me so much that my amature wobbling around corner becomes too big a source of fun

(which sounds to me like somewhere around the TORS and the SS)


i'd mess with the baffles, but i'm wanting slash cuts anyway and for now time isn't too available.

I should'nt worry how loud they are, unless you intend too ride round like a power ranger, got three sets, two straight thru and one for MOT, hoping to get a set of reverse cone megas shortly, the miles and countries i've done with them on,hav'nt even had a glance or a pull from the old bill.

Hi if you go with TOR'S you might want to remove the AI
found with my long slash cut straight through TOR'S I had alot of backfire on deceleration by removing the AI it help alot my TOR'S are early ones. do keep revs down around the old bill tho

I quiet like the backfire......filtering through West Yorkshire traffic every day it gets the attention of the cagers.
