Just got home from helping Brent put on his new pipes. They are some shorty turn outs from JC Whitney. There really isn’t much to the built in baffles, they are like just a couple rotating tabs inside. After we put them in the first time and fired them up, they are loud. Good sound, but loud. So, off they cam and in went a couple biscuits of steel wool in each side and that help a ton. Still good sound, but much more tolerable. Since there really isn’t much to hold in the steel wool, I am not sure how long it'll last.  Soren

Soren, are the turn outs just clamped to the head pipes? may go with same set up but concerned with vibration if pipe isn't secured somehow at the rear---have had bolts come loose from exhaust port on head----

Hey Soren, only because I've seen you mention it a couple of times.... be careful with the steel wool, that stuff is more flammable than drunk at a bonfire. Little spark or backfire out the pipes will prolly light it up like a roman candle. I don't think a brief fire in the pipes would really damage anything but shooting a flaming fire ball out the back into the lovely countryside or better yet into the grill of a tailgating cager might cause a few probs. Wait, I like the tailgater part, carry on.

I was thinking about that too. The problem is that the bracket things that came with the pipes are not very long and definitley not long enough to reach where the stock hangers were. I know a few other people have installed shorty pipes I am not sure what they have or have not done about mounting.

So far I havent had any trouble with the steel wool I have used in my pipes. I have heard that it is flamable and tried looking up the flash point of steel wool online, every MSDS sheet I found listed "Not Applicable" for flash point. The melting temps seem to range at about 1750 degrees. I would think that if it's getting that hot in there, then something is wrong.

I am not sure how much they are, but I know they are less then $100 for the pair.
I am wondering how you put steel wool in the pipes, I have wondered what those would look like on our bike, look good but dont want anything extremly loud.

I got D & D pipes on my 08 and i am just not satisfied with how I sound, too quiet at idle. I got a 66 bonneville T100 chopped out and I know those are straight pipes but god does that sound good. Is it possible to make the 08 sound something like that?

Just shove it in the header end of the pipe. However, I dont know how long it will stay in without blowing out sice there really inst much to hold it in, just a couple tabs inside the pipes for back pressure.

Hey Everyone,
Thanks Soren, for getting a photo of my bike on here, I was wondering how I was going to do that. The pipes are from JC Whitney Stock number: ZX025200R
The bike, is still soooo loud. The cars did hear me going down the freeway to work. It is much quieter than it was before adding some steel wool. As Soren, mentioned I don't know how long it will last.
The other big thing I have noticed, is the bike feels much, much lighter than it did with the stock pipes. I didn't realize it would make that much difference.

I have the longer 32" pipes from JCW on without any hangers on them. I've ridden through Germany, France, Austria, Italy, and Poland this summer with only having to tighten down the bolts once. You're right...they are loud!
