When riding into an area you don't know well, fill the tank at every chance, as the next chance may be a little too far.
If you do find yourself low on fuel, try to keep your speed down to where you get decent economy. Use as high a gear as is practical, the fewer times per mile the engine turns, the less fuel/air is pumped through it.
When low on fuel, stay to the side of the road except to pass when you come up behind very slow traffic that would make you use a lower gear if you followed. Along with making it easier to pull off the road if you run out of fuel, you will have an easier time accessing an unexpected place to fill up.
