Hey everybody
I realise this is a bike forum but I need a little help with a car problem.

A few of you know I have a '72 Buick Riviera - well I just pulled the driver's door handle off!
The actual door lever has broken at what appears to be the pivot point.

Anyone have a car breakers near them?
Only if you're passing, could someone ask if they have a door handle assembly that is looking for a good home?

I know I'm not exactly next door to any of you all but hey, we have postal services and I have cash.

I can get most parts for the car over here but stuff like door handle assemblies are like rocking horse teeth ... I mean hens sh!t ... oh, you know what I mean!

Thanks in advance

FT

Thanks.
I'll have a look but I realise I forgot to mention it's the outside handle ... d'oh!!

I know exactly why it's broken ... I was making noises today about selling it so the car decided to screw me up by breaking!

Well you see FT, it probably rusted on ya, and that's why it broke! Yep, that part probably got wet and rusted on ya, alright!

(how many times to I have to tell ya that even though those particular Buick Rivies are known as "Boattails", you DON'T take 'em out there to the lake and see if they'll FLOAT!!!)

(BTW...good luck...let me know if Ed's suggestion doesn't work out...I'm sure here in the land of Classic Cars, otherwise known as California, I should be able to find somethin' for ya here)

Hey Dwight
Some very useful stuff listed there but I couldn't see the exterior door handle.
Feels like aluminium (as opposed to aluminum! ).

Like I say, only if you're passin' or they're close by ....

Let me make a few local calls within the next 24 hours and I'll see what I can find for ya!

Left outside door handle, huh?! I'll get back to ya about this time tomorrow, okay?!

You're too good mate.
I haven't forgotten your little parcel I have to send you either.

Actually, it would be quite a thing, the car was originally imported to the UK from CA!!

Well so far FT, I've put in about 6 calls to places that specialize in collectable autos, and each one is giving me the name of the next guy.(you know how it goes) One guy at some place in Pearsonville CA,(whereever the heck that is?) who sounded like he knew what he was talkin' about, told me that those babies are like hen's teeth nowdays, as they have a tendency to break, and all the door handles off all his early '70s Riviera were long gone.

BUT...I've just talked to a guy at a place called Turner's Classic Auto Salvage(1-888-212-0918) who said he'd check and see if he has one, and he said he'd call me back in about an hour from now and let me know.

(so keep your fingers crossed, dude!)

I'll keep an eye on the outcome from Pacific Standard Time, if there is no luck there I'll call the salvage yards out here tomorrow. Unfortunately, they are all closed for the day in Eastern Standard Time.

'Fraid not.
It hinges at the thickest part and there is a little rubber stopper at the thin end.

BTW FT, on ebaymotors (through: Buick.net) I found a WHOLE '72 Rivie that somebody in Indiana is selling for parts salvage and it's "only" at about $550.00 right now!

If I remember rightly, didn't Clarkson's pick-up actually get across to France?

Well, if it's in VENICE parked along Abbott-Kinney Blvd, don't bother Cindy! I'M closer to it than YOU ARE now!

(just tell me the cross-street and I'll hop on the 405 and the Marina Fwy and see what I can do!)

Cool, I like a co-conspirator! Okay, when you turn right on Abbot Kinney from Venice Blvd. make then very next left on Rialto, then make a quick right on Cabrillo . . .

Called the guy back at Turner's and he said it's been very busy there and so he hasn't had a chance to check this out yet. Said he'd call me back later.

(did that sound a little like Jack Webb there???...."Just the facts Ma'am. Just the facts!")

Ahem...I DO believe that's the opening line to "Naked City" there Cindy, NOT "Dragnet".

And as I recall, the line was..."There are SEVEN million people......", because the program was located in NYC.

(and...I doubt any of them folks in The Big Apple, most of 'em who don't drive, would have the driver's side door handle for a 1972 Boattail Buick Riviera ANYWAY!!!)

Yeah. I have to kind of agree with him...in retrospect. Watching an episode today it seems sooooo friggin' "earnest" you almost have to laugh at it, but back then it seemed like "hard-hitting realism", didn't it?!

FT

Guess I sent the wrong person the email, I have sent you one now. Hope I can help out.

My brother swears that the old Dragnet program was a comedy.

And why did they use "714" as the badge number on the intro?

Well, Grasshoppa, a Dragnet trivia site found through 'the Google' provides the following explanation:

There are multiple explanations for the use of this number. Jack Webb was a big Babe Ruth fan, and Ruth hit 714 home runs in his baseball career. The number is also said to be from Jack's mother's birthday (July 14th).
However, Laurie (Dragnet advisor and LAPD Sergeant Dan Cooke's daughter) also writes: Although plausible, these are not quite right. Sgt. Dan Cooke was closely associated with Jack Webb. He originated some of the script concepts and was the technical director for a number of the Dragnet episodes. Badge 714 was Sgt. Cooke's badge and was retired from the LAPD when Sgt. Cooke arranged for the use of his badge for the series. Sgt. Cooke has since passed away and the badge was donated by Cooke's widow to the LAPD Police Academy's Museum. You can see it there now—and the plaque next to the badge will validate this information.
