Went to a concert the other day 25000 people great seats and basically had a blast but man there are some thing the bug the heck out of me 10) Opening act that you never heard of wanting you to sing along his big "hit" you never heard of. ahhh guys your a opening please sing your own freaking songs!!! 9)The drunk guy who always sits by me spilling his beer and leaving and comming 5 times during the main show. ahh you just paid 75 bucks should you be sober enough to watch the concert??? 8) The guy behind you that wants everyone to sit down. ahhh its a concert, music, people having fun go sit at the movies. 7) $11.00 dollar warm beers. that one speaks for itself 6) Instead of lighters the want to to wave your cell phone with the music. Shall I say super geek?? 5) 300 pound women/men in belly shirts and extra short skirts/shorts. :::::shuder::: 4) Toyota Tunda sponsering a country band. Idiots 3) The artest changes the song you have been waiting to hear all night. Its a hit because people like the way it sounds 2) People who dont watch the opening act. There is lots of great bands who at one time opened for someone. 1) And this one really is huge to me. Texting ok first I dont get it but please turn the freaking cell phone off and watch the show the light from the phone bugs me plus its just plain rude ok im done please feal free to add your own

$5 for a bottle of water at an outdoor concert in 90 degree heat, after they make you throw yours away at the entrance.

Aren't 10 and 2 somewhat contradictory?
Also, what's wrong with Toyota "Tunda?" By all accounts they are great trucks. Or is it because they are from a Japanese company? Is it a redneck thing?

At Christian concerts the "artists" often give a "sermon" between each and every song. I say, "Just shut up and sing." Of course, I say it nicely.

Outlaws, one of my favorites. I can remember when THEY were the headliners at major concerts. Oops, might be telling my age.

I also think that 10 & 2 are contradictory. Heck, if I'm paying $70+ for a ticket, I sure as heck want to see a quality opening act, or none as long as the headliner makes up for it (see RUSH, 3 hours of pure musical bliss, and starting ON TIME! How often do you have that!).
And, #8, being ****** at the guy behind you that wants you to sit down. This cracks me up because I've realized the best tickets are in the cheap seats where you can move around and find the sonic and visual sweet spot and sit there and spread out relaxed and mellow out enjoying the show, unlike those who spend hundreds of $s getting as close as they can to the stage (great seats! woo hoo!) and wind up standing on their toes trying to get a glimpse of a view and getting tired and bored in the first hour and wanting to either text or leave to a nightclub playing dance music...
Don't get me wrong- I love concerts and people who enjoy them. Have been going to hundreds since the 60's. But don't whine about what was a bad experience because you control it and can easily make it a good one!
Cheers!
JZ
P.S. King's X opening for Extreme was one helluva show!

10 & 2 aren't contradictory. There is a difference between listening to an opening act and the opening act thinking that you know all their songs.
BTW.. what ever happened to the ol days when you could see 5 bands for 5 bucks?

Ok, point taken. But, is it the fault of the opening band that they're there? They're there because they're there whether the ticket buyer likes it or not...

Actually, I went to a show last night just to see the opening band- King's X. Extreme was the headliner, but it should've been the other way around. King's X kicked a.s.s.!

Nope. But actually some of the best bands I have ever heard were lesser known bands and sometimes I have have enjoyed the opening acts better than the headline band, and in a few cases I went to a show to see some of the opeiners instead of the headliner.

This discussion reminds me of the best opening band I've ever seen- the Eagles opening for the Allman Bros. in the Boston Garden in '75. How's that for an opener?! :-)

Everyone has to start somehwere!
One of my favorites was the Violent Femmes and Wall of Voodoo opening for Oingo Boingo in '85 in Salt Lake (plus a couple local bands that were really good)

Chris.... I hate to be the one to inform you but, er, you're getting old. The last concert I attended was an open-air affair. The group was the Beach Boys - my wife's favorite group from her teens. It was a good time, people were there for the music. No opening act. Not too many morons. It was (yawn) enjoyable. The problem I've always had with concerts is that rarely can the artist/group reproduce live the same musical experience that you got from their recorded material, the reason you go to see them in the first place.
A few exceptions to this were concerts I saw many years ago by the following: Todd Rundgren The Tubes King Crimson Humble Pie Foghat Doobie Bros. Allman Bros. Lynyrd Skynyrd Canned Heat
I wasn't much for live concerts, but those were memorable because the music was the thing, not the "event"....

Bands that go on the "beat the dead horse" tour, that is, they use the bands name (Styx, Foreigner, Boston), when in reality, there's only 1, maybe 2 original members, solely to extract tons of cash for the name...I've always loved the band "Boston", whom is coming to Atlanta this month, and would normally be first in line for tix...but not this time....I think the only original member is Tom Scholz...the rest are "fill ins"....The lead singer now, was working at Home Depot last year....Not gonna fall for the headliner name with contract or "whoever" fill ins...

High tech support costs and travel costs. Everything has multiplied by a factor of 10 in the past decade.

Couple of weeks ago I saw Def Leppard and Whitesnake in Cardiff.
I went specifically to see the support act - Thunder. I've done this before. They were "special guests" on the Deep Purple tour a couple of years ago. Saw Thunder (amazing as ever), Peter Frampton was on next.... he was crap so went home... didn't see Purple.
Ok I stayed for the Whitesnake and DL sets... while David Coverdale has not worn well, DL were really quite good.
Oh and £3.50 for an alcopop...there was only lager other than those....and I hate lager.

As for #10, ever think maybe they want you to 'sing along' because they can't remember the song?

Nah, mostly it's because they can't see the audience through the bright lights and they want the ego boost of feeling the audience participate.

Don't forget the Show Talkers. These are the people that sit right behind you and talk about work or whatever. My wife will Sshhhh them like they are 5 year olds. I always love the look on their faces, like she's bothering them.
If you want to talk, do it while your on your next beer run.

Haha! Went to a Yes show a few years ago, probably around my 11th or 12th or 10th Yes show in 30-something years, but who's counting?! (Except for the jackhole sitting next to me who claimed it was his 27th Yes show going way back to when they were in the womb.) Anyway, as a Yes fan and especially a "Tales" album fan (saw the Tales tour in '74), I'm always hoping to hear "The Ritual", my all-time favorite Yes tune. It's rarely performed live. This night, however, it happened. But, it was almost to the end of the show, and after me patiently and painfully enduring during the show to this point constant talking, cell phone use, and the jackhole next to me trying to impress his wife, girlfriend, social worker, whoever, still talking about all the Yes concerts he's ever been to. Then, I heard the first note (I was always pretty good at recognizing songs in the first note or two just like the game show)- it was The Ritual, live, in front of me, been many years since I heard it live, and I freaked! I yelled out, without premeditation, "SHUT UP! And, everybody within shouting distance in front, in back, to the left, and to the right, DID! Even the jackhole next to me finally shut his piehole! Some dared to look at me, scaringly, as if I was a serial killer amongst them. But, all I could do after my outburst was smile like a mofo and enjoy in silence and without distraction, listening to something that I've been waiting so long for. And, Yes didn't disappoint! Thank you!
The moral of this story- don't be afraid or hold back to yell, "SHUT UP!"

Friar John, I understand your edit, and I apologize for you having to do it. But, honestly, saying "SHUT UP" vs. what I originally wrote has much less impact on the offenders, if any. Yelling only "SHUT UP" is just very weak, even laughable for the ones you want to have an effect on. Might as well just sit there and take it. But, yelling "SHUT THE EFF UP" works so much better! :-) We have our rights!

I disagree with number 3. If I like the band, I probably have their albums at home. I want some variation on the themes. These days I would think if it sounds like the album, they're probably lip-syncing. Of course it's been ages since I've gone to concerts. Late '60s-late'70s though I went to all that I could. That was the thing to do and I saw a lot of great bands. On opening acts: Sometime early in that haze I went to see Black Oak Arkansas. The opener was some band I hadn't heard of called Montrose. Ronnie and Sammy and Co. put on one of the best shows ever!!! I think they did about fifteen minutes of "Bad Motor Scooter" . Mostly Ronnie Montrose's guitar work BOA sucked, having to follow them.

Yeah, but strictly speaking you have no rights here. Everything is a privilege. The AUP is clear.
Your story/point was still a good one, which is why I didn't delete the post entirely. I'm amazed at how unruly Yes fans are.

>> Yeah, but strictly speaking you have no rights here. Everything is a privilege. The AUP is clear.
Point taken.
And, Yes fans aren't the unruly ones. It's the non-fans who go to Yes concerts that ruin it. Goes for most other "old-time" rock bands' shows. Why do people bother going if they're not going to get into the music? Actually, I do know why- it's the event. My 24-year old son, who's been going to Allman Bros. concerts with his friends for the past decade said they go because it's a big party. Meanwhile, I now don't go to see them, my all-tine faves. Old fart? No. Just want to enjoy hassle-free great music. And, for the money charged these days (especially the added-on freakin' fees), the frustration isn't worth the little enjoyment, if any...

I generally want to go for the music, too. But most concert venues, especially for large acts, have horrible acoustics. Last October we went to Great Falls to see Rob Zombie and most people behaved themselves. It was a small enough room to actually hear the music. But then the troublemaker started up. We figured by sitting sorta off to the side and towards the back we would be spared any incidents. Standing on the bleachers below us this guy started peeing all over the (empty) bleachers below him. He was acting generally rowdy, drunk/stoned/tweaking/whatever. Eventually he was "escorted" out.

I went to a YES concert about 6-7 years ago. They were lucky if 1000 people showed up- it was sad and this was at the first midwest theater(biggest in chicagoland). Good show.

The last concert I went to was the Greatful Dead and Bob Dylan, In Foxboro Stadium (Foxboro Mass) couple years before Jerry died.
Open air stadium mid July. The grounds keepers were hosing down the crowd to try and prevent heat stroke.
Was supprised that the Dead opened the show. Was not surprised that i could not understand a word that Dylan sang.(anyone thats seen him live will tell ya you cant understand him).
What did surprise me was the crowd, waa mostly young kids. I'd say between 16-25 all dressed up like "hippies". There I was expecting to be bonding with a bunch of burned out old acid heads. And found myself surrounded by a hoard of teeny boppers looking like they were going to a holloween party.

Sounds almost like whenever I have gone to any of the shows that fetures 80s bands. What is even funnier is that we do have a good alternative music station here that plays some of the really good 80's punk along with some of the new alternative stuff, and you'll over hear some kids talking and say something like, "Did you hear that new song from Suicidal Tendacies, 'Institutionalized'?" (or insert other 80's song). I just cant help but laugh because they seem to have no clue that the stuff they think is new is over 20 years old and I bought the album when it was new.

Oh, and the Outlaws also were a gold and platnimum selling band.4 major hits at least. great band! in the 90s they changed their name to Blackhawk and went country. Good to see them back to southern rock!

I lived in Jacksonville in the late 80’s and would go to the Holladay Inn bar in Orange Park. One night the bar tender told me to be there on the next Tuesday night to see this cool band. When I ask who was going to be playing he just said you want to be here. Around 8:30 with about 40 people in the bar the band finally came on. It looked like there were 15 people on stage. I don’t remember who they all were, but it was members of Lynyrd Skynyrd, .38 Special, The Outlaws. I do remember that Donnie and Jonny Van Zant did most of the singing.

I was at a show during that tour....saw fourth of July at Rich Stadium in Buffalo, roughly 1988 or so. We too were surprised the Dead opened, and none too happy about it either. Unfortunately, I was a mere child at the age of 20 or so. As you probably know, Touch of Grey brought a lot of attention to the band, though I can say I started seeing them before its' release...the Grateful Dead were my first concert, and I loved it. Continued to see shows until Jerrys untimely passing, and I still participate in trading and listening to live Dead shows. I never participated in the hippie look, though I'd wear a tye-dye on occasion, I kept my hair style presentable for work and college. I feel fortunate that I was able to experience the Dead, and that I "got it". After I ride my Triumph home from work, I think I might go ahead and listen to some live dead....maybe enjoy a beer too.
