I recently installed a set of long TORS on my bike, and I'm concerned the carbs are a bit lean. Another member is sending a set of 122 mains (thanks Dave!), but I'm wondering if one step richer than stock will be sufficient. Is there a consensus on which jet size is optimum when the stock pipes are replaced with TORS? I'm not planning to mod the intake system, so just want to compensate for the pipes. My other question would be whether I'm risking motor damage (or a shorter life) by riding the bike with the stock jets.

Most dealers dont do any rejetting for installing just a set of TORS unless you are changing to either a UNI or K & N filter.

Rejet not needed for the TORS, as skid says unless you do other mods that effect the air flow.

The 122 won't hurt. Check the colour of your plugs. If they are white, you are way too lean. If you pull the snorkel you will have to rejet but you will notice an improvement in acceleration.

I'm surprised to hear this (rejetting not required). That can only mean the intake system is really restricitive. Maybe I'll reconsider that end of the engine when time permits.

The stock airbox is a bottle neck. I suggest that you bite the bullet & ditch the airbox, too. Do that & you will of course need to jet way up. Pods are really the way to go for power.

Look in the tech vault for "ghetto freak". Or what I did was just remove the snorkel and install a k&n filter. Not quite the freak kit, but it serves me well.

Jack, welcome to the fun and games with improving your stock bike. For $50 I would suggest removing the snorkel, replacing the stock filter with a K&N and rejetting the mains to 128 or thereabouts.

Over time when or if the bug bites, the K&N pods are a real nice improvement I believe and then you can look at 145 mains, a 42 pilot jet and maybe a shim on the needle. I just took off a pr of SS pipes (too loud for me) and put the tors back on and my current set up is as below, but I'm waiting on 42 pilots to replace the stock 40's.

Well, now I'm confused. I downloaded the jetting calculator from Dinqua's site, and it shows the jets needing to be changed two steps (from 120 to 124) when the stock pipes are replaced with TORS. My bike does have a sound that I associate with being slightly lean, and that's one reason I'm still concerned. Also, I'm not a believer in reading plugs (I liken it to reading tea leaves). Should I just richen this up (maybe with 125s) and assume it'll be OK? I'm really worried about burning the valves in this 105 degree Texas heat.

EDIT: And now, to make matters worse, I'm thinking I might want to drill the bottom of the airbox. For that (plus the TORS), the calculator result is 129. Can I open up the airbox, install 130 mains and just trust it to be approximately correct?

I had the TOR longs on my BA. I had 128's but changed to 125's which did the trick. Stock air box and filter with the snorkel removed.

Thanks Pat. I've decided to change to 125s for now, in accordance with the calculator. I'll switch 'em out for 130s after I mod the airbox. That's probably as far as I need to go with this aspect of the mods.

A quick check to see if you are lean is to accelerate hard for a few seconds in high gear then back off a bit. If the bike seems to pull harder when you back off slightly, you are too lean.

When I got my bike I had the tor's on right off the floor. The dealer left the 120 mains in. and it ran fine until I really got to doing things like drilling out the bottom of the air box, with the UNI filter tapped out and was running 130. Til I went freak and Thunderbike pipes.

Blocking the crossover didn't really effect performance but did change the note a little. It made it so each side has it's own note, kind of separated the sound so you hear each cyl. individually instead of a blended sound. I didn't notice a change one way or the other on either of our bikes seat of the pants. Now if I did a before and after dyno there may have been some small difference but I really don't know that for sure since I didn't do a before or after.

pretty much , yep. Didn't make it any louder either.

I have bubs, stock box/filter, no top snorkle.

I went with 125 mains and TWO shims on the needle.....it runs like a raped ape.
