For whisk(e)y, I've found that Redbreast (single malt Irish) is one of the best, if you can find it.
Recently, I've taken to trying rum - if you're looking for something sweet & smooth, I'd say you can't do much better than Zaya. At ~$28/bottle, the price ain't bad either.
Ron Zacapa Centenario and Ron Matusalem Gran Reserva are also very good.
