I have decided that it is time to determine my 'signature' spirit. I have long been a fan of single malt scotch. I enjoy the "Glens..." (Glenfidditch) but find many a bit too 'peaty.' After reading Neil Peart's book, I have tried The Macallen, but find it tastes much the same as Glenfidditch. I have recently sampled The Dalmore 21 for the first time and enjoyed it very much. A friend tells me I should try good Bourbon. So I'll open this can of worms so to speak: 1. What's your signature spirit? 2. Any recommendations for me? I enjoy single malt scotch, but like sweet and smooth. Let the fun begin

I prefer a good añejo tequila. I have some Doña Estancia that is excellent. Picked it up in Mexico. Haven't seen any (Doña Estancia) in the U.S. No lime. No salt. That's for Cuervo, 'cause Cuervo is crap .

He's correct. Throw that foul, musty tastin' scotch in the loo and get yourself some Knob Creek. You'll be better for it.

I agree on the single malts. Cut my teeth on blended scotch (Johnny Red by choice) a few decades back and have progressed to enjoy various singles. My current favorite is Glenkinchie (sp.?) 12 yo. Smooth as silk all by itself.

Elijah Craig, the standard blend. Good enough straight or over ice to justify the slight price increase over Beam, etc.
Patron Silver for an after-dinner drink.

Not really a whiskey, but when I was in Germany, I was rather partial to Caruba 180 proof rum. In an emergency, you could use it for fuel. Some 20 years ago, Yukon Jack was a favorite.

Chivas Regal or Johnnie Walker. I enjoy most of the Johnnie rainbow - Black, Green, Gold, Blue. Not a big fan of red and honestly I can't taste a difference between 18yr Gold and 25yr Blue so I stick with Gold unless the boss is buying!

I have always liked Lagavulin. A single Islay Malt. Go for the 25 year if you can run to that. So smooth!
These words are from the label. Maybe don't sound so grand written here but when you have had a few glasses they conjure up wonderful images in you your mind...
"Moss water, passing over rocky falls, steeped in mountain air & moorland peat, distilled & matured in oak casks exposed to the sea shape Lagavulin's robust & smoky character. Time, say the islanders, takes out the fire but leaves in the warmth"

Oh my, if I lived that close to the holy ground of Bushmills there'd be trouble. lol Just picked up Bushmills 1608 this week and cannot wait to try it. I've also got the rest of the Bushmills line of Black, 10, 16 & 21, plus the Distillery Reserve. Yum. The juice of the barley, that's the stuff!

If you like sweet then look for whiskies matured in madeira , sherry or port casks . Glenfiddich does a nice one called Solera Reserve ,done quite a few bottles of that in the last few years. my all time favs are from Glenmorangie,Sherry Wood or Madeira Wood Finish .i,m a tad biased tho ,i lived down the road from the distillery in Tain back in the 80s.

I bought a bottle of 18 yr old Elijah Craig for my Colorado trip, and if it's smooth and sweet he's after this is the Bourbon. Not bad at $36/bottle. A Scotch of the same quality would cost $75 or more.

The Bushmills is just the tip of the iceberg brother Erwin. Here's a little tease for you: Midleton 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 & 2007.

Lately I've been enjoying the Irish. Jameson or Bushmill. For Scotch, my choice would be the 12 yr old Aberlour. Unfortunately, I finished the Jameson last night and the cupboard is bare so this is a very untimely thread....

Been drinking my signature drink all night.....anything with alcohol.
But, for you bourbon drinkers; there is only one and that is BLANTONS.
It is a mere $40-50 for 750ml. It is costly for those filthy poor people I so despise.
Evan Williams is $17.50 at Sam's Club for a tasty, affordable 1.75 liter bottle.
By the way, I hate Triumph Motorcycles. All three of mine require me to ride them. And since this is my first post in months, I reiterate my distaste in Dwight's posts.
I hope I spelled everything okay. Someone please check my punctuation. Wouldn't want anyone to think I was an idgit.

Well Paul, your spelling was pretty good, and your punctuation wasn't too bad, but I think you might have used the wrong preposition in that line, "I reiterate my distaste IN Dwight's posts." You see, I THINK you meant to say "I reiterate my distaste OF Dwight's posts", didn't ya?! (and dude, I gotta say I think your taste in alcohol might be a little suspect here TOO!!!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

For whisk(e)y, I've found that Redbreast (single malt Irish) is one of the best, if you can find it.
Recently, I've taken to trying rum - if you're looking for something sweet & smooth, I'd say you can't do much better than Zaya. At ~$28/bottle, the price ain't bad either.
Ron Zacapa Centenario and Ron Matusalem Gran Reserva are also very good.
