It reminds me of a 1970's Universal Japanese Motorcycle. If they think they are going to attract the Harley crowd, they need a new marketing department. I can't describe this 1600cc machine and be politically correct. Or even polite.

HEY!!! Do ya think that engine might have looked a little better if they would have maybe put a little FINNING on those cylinder barrels?
You know Dwight that may be it. I was kinda scatching my brain on why the look of the motor was rubbing me the wrong way. It does look to blocky and needs better lines. But that is niether here or there as they say because I'm keeping Sadie for a while.

I'm just happy I can buy another bike...that's not a Hardley! I'm going to put down a deposit and sell the Speedy...One in black please The pipes will have to go, then lower the rear. Maybe some bars, a single seat, luggage rack, Lucas tail light and maybe an old school Triumph badge. Basically everything I like on my Speedy. I don't dig the sprocket cover or the r/h ignition key very much though.
...yes, that is a single seat...no, I will not put the other seat on...yes, I am selfish...yes, you should buy your own bike

I used to be a Purist, if it wasn't English & pre 1975 it didn't deserve shed space - then I bought my first America & a second, a whole different dimension opened up - now I've seen pictures of the new Thunderbird- oh yeah. Just happened to mention that it sure would make a nice outfit to the wife and got what only could be described as "The Death Stare". Plans on hold!!!!

Hey Gang,
Let's face it...We finally got a large parallel twin. Let's make the best of it. I'm sure we'll see several spin offs models soon.
Who's taking a chance on buying the first batch or waiting for the bugs to be sorted out?????

Thanks to Snows' photoshop effort (thanks Snows), I would be willing to take a serious look at it from day one.

One thing that could put me off is if it is way too heavy (I am not into aircraft-carriers). I bet that bike is great for long distances and that that engine is hot! I can hear it now.

Well I waited and waited before I weighted in abouth the new Thunderbird. At first I wasn't crazy about the first pic I saw of it, that low shot showing the front and right side at the same time. Then the other pics came out and I said, from the profile I really like but then the head on shot came out and I really, really hated that but really, really liked it from the rear. I've read all of the posts in this thread and most have complained about the engine not being a Triumph (yes Dwight, I heard you the first, second and third time). After giving it a few days to look it over for the most part I like it. What would I prefer on it to be different? First, I want a bigger Triumph badge. Second, straight pipes. Third, I would like to see a fuller rear fender so that if you do want to bob it you can but if you don't..... Oh and here's a shot of a 2001 Triumph Thunderbird engine. So the new Thunderbird has a Triumph engine, fins or no and I think we can all agree that Triumph does develop some great engines.

Considering almost 1282 people have looked at this thread since about 6:00pm, I would say this new Triumph will do very well. I agree I'm not liking the tank. I would rather they get rid of the console for traditional gauges (tach and speedo) like on the Rocket III and Classic but if it holds close to 6 gallons I could live with it. I like the rear end, the belt drive and the clear lenses on the turn signals and also the headlight. Not crazy about the funny looking valves on the engine and also the small Triumph badge, as wojo said. If it goes for around 10 or 11 grand it would be a good deal vs Harley or even Honda VTX 1800 or other Japanese big bore twins. But I'm afraid I will have to agree with Friarjohn. I would rather get a leftover new Rocket III like an 07 or I have even seen some new 06s with good prices.Something about those 140 ponies that intrique me. But Yota still wins the prize. He was closest with his guess of it being a "1620"

Make that 2520 people I just saw the other thread. this shows more interest then the Rocket already. This bike will be a hit...no problem.

It really looks ugly, just like a Japaneese bike. All they had to do was to make it look like an America, Speedmaster, or a Bonneville. The wheels are terrible. The profile of the engine looks like a Suzuki twin or single. The tank looks like a Honda. They even dorked up the beautiful headlight we have on the America/Speedmaster. It looks almost as bad as the Rocket 3. If my America ever quits on me, and if I did not get a used America/Speedmaster/Bonneville, but decided to get a bigger bike, I think I would have to start looking maybe at another classic, probably a BMW. I have been waiting for nothing.

Tom, wait until you see it in real life. A man who has sat on one told me the tank is very very similar to the 2008 Speedy tank and there are lots of other styling cues that have been borrowed from current Triumphs.
His advise is to wait until you see a real one, in the flesh and then decide. The photos do not do it justice.

I agree. I hated the new America/Speedie tanks when they showed pictures but seeing them in person, I didn't think they were that bad. I still prefer the pre-EFI style but they are still beautiful bikes.
I'll be waiting until summer of '09 for my final judgement.

Hey John, I am with you on most of your points. However, I kind of like the pipes, because they convey that Legend/Tbird Sport/hotrod look. I didn't even consider the bag concerns until seeing Glazer's post. He is a smart man that Glazer. Overall, as someone who is in marketing, I completely see both sides of the picture. Triumph needs to be true to its heritage and brand, but they also need to evolve. Being 100% true to the Meriden heritage didn't really work out for the previous regime long term, and the Hinckley crowd, to their credit, have been able to grow with new, innovative designs like the 675 and Speed Triple. Hey, if they were just going to sit around and make air-cooled twins, they would get criticism for not being innovative like everyone's favorite pin cushion Harley Davidson. Heck, my Sprint isn't exactly retro, and I still love it. It is a fantastic motorcycle. So is the Tiger. Does it look like a 1967 Tiger? No way, but it is still fantastic. I am as unhappy as anyone on here who would like to see the Bonnie tank and the spoked wheels, but to survive you have to make some concessions to the mass market. Triumph did this with the R3 Tourer, and they are attempting to do this with the new Tbird. Hey, the niche market is cool, but cool can only take them so far. Us heritage types ain't getting any younger, and there are plenty of people who want cast wheels, belt drive, EFI. Otherwise, why would they do it? Not bashing anyone, as I respect all opinoins that I read here, but sometimes, I get the impression that some would rather see Triumph just go away before they will accept some concessions to what the market actually wants. Let's give them a chance. They have made huge improvements to the R3, in my opinion, and hopefully, this Tbird will continue to evolve as well. I'll see y'all on the road astride my '03 Caspian Blue TBA. Hey, where did that color go, as it is clearly the best they have ever produced!!!!!! Perhaps, my opinoin is in the minority!

I don't like the new tanks in person or in the pix and I still don't like anything about the new T-birds except the bigger displacement. That being said I like my 790 SM as is and have no desire to buy a larger bike anyway so all is good. I have a great time riding my SM and love doing little custom jobs on it and Wendys America that, by the way, took 1st in another show even beating out a 59 Pan with custom side car that I really liked.

I think you made some good observations there Ryan, however there's a couple there that I think you may be just off the mark.(kind'a like the T-bird here)... Quote:

Seeing as how you appear to know the individual demographics involved with what sells to each of those demographics, you should know that cruisers by far tend to appeal to the more conservative and traditional crowd out there. As an example, H-D still sells far less V-Rods to their customer base than they do the rest of their Big Twin lineup, and most probably because their line of air-cooled cruisers ARE more "conservative" in design. And so, if Triumph's target with the T-Bird IS that crowd, as I've heard and read many times about this particular model, then in that case I think to NOT make it look as "retro" and "air-cooled as possible" would be a big ol' mistake on Triumph's part.
And while I agree that Triumph's lineup of street motorcycles is probably the widest and most diverse of any brand out there today, and has in the past pushed the envelope a bit over the years by offering "out of the ordinary machines" such as the Speed Triple and the 675, which appeal to a whole different demographic, if Triumph's attempt is to take a bite out of H-D's ENORMOUS Big Twin sales, then they should have gone MORE "conservative" with this design.

Yes, they did. They made the R3 Tourer more conservative and more H-D looking in design than the standard R3 in an attempt to sway the more "traditional" H-D riders away from purchasing a Road Glide, didn't they?! And that's kind of my point here.

Dwight, a very good point indeed that I did not consider. Thank you for mentioning it. However, you are probably giving the average consumer too much credit. Most are too lazy to figure out what is innovative, etc. so they just go with what they see. To me, this bike looks like it has a little of everything for today's cruiser buyer
brand loyalists/boomers - Triumph name, some styling ques, handling of a Triumph (hopefully), and other items many are craving for in a cruiser (the cast wheels, the belt drive).
new kids on the block - price (hopefully), maintenance, looks, and handling (hopefully). It also looks like what you see on the road today that is "hip," The Kawazukis.
harley guys - price (hopefully), maintenance, not a Harley but still a Triumph. Not that R3 monster.
It seems to me that they have just about everyting covered now that they have added this bike to their lineup, though I personally still see a need for a 900 or 1200cc America. I guess that is why Wiseco is in business as so many on this site have said!

Gotta admit Mike, that Caspian Blue is one nice color. (it's too bad they didn't offer it in '02 when I bought by Cardinal Red 'cuz I would have probably bought that instead)
BTW...regarding the T-Bird here folks...
What I can't seem to understand is the idea which some folks are proposing that the T-Bird "looks japanese"???
If you folks recall, back in the 1960s ALL "big" japanese motorcycles looked a bit "british" because back when BSA was the world's best selling motorcycle and the british motorcycle industry was in it's prime, the japanese wanted some of that market, and so they designed their machines according. Even the classic CB750 Hondas or most any of what has now become known as the UJM(Universal Japanese Motorcycle) took many of it's design cues from the old british style.
Now, of course, the "American V-Twin Look" is more popular, and thus Japan Inc makes motorcycles in that vein to compete in this now larger market.(I'm of course talking about the "standard" or "cruiser" models, not sportbikes here)
As far as I could ever tell, Japan Inc. seldonly "creates" an original look. And so to say a machine "looks japanese" I find to be somewhat of a misnomer.

So, as I take it, saying it "looks Japanese" means it pretty much looks like everything else.

I would think that the idea is to make some previous Triumph owners buy the new bike but more importantly would be to attract new owners into the Triumph family.
Having it look "Japanese"? It's a cruiser, there is only so much you can do. If you want it to look completely different you end up with the Victory Vision.
Ryan, that's what's great about options. If you like the pipes you keep them, me I'd like them to be straight. Meeting glazer's option of saddlebags just makes it that much better.

I do understand the homogenizing of cruiser bikes, but Triumph could try a little harder to keep some of it's identifiable heritage. The tank style, name plate, headlight, speedo/tach are a few things besides the vertical twin that don't have to look like everything else.
I drive a Jeep Wrangler. My new 2008 is larger, modernized, even has 4 doors, but still looks like a Jeep. I hate to see Triumph cruisers become like cars where after the Ford Taurus came out, all makes of 4 doors looked the same. Copying nice features is one thing, but losing identity is another. Other than a V-Rod, Harleys still look like Harleys. They know how valuable their heritage is.

I hear that. The Japanese make good bikes but I can't tell a Honda from a Star from a Kawa without reading the label. When you see a Bonnie or any of the derivatives, you can tell what brand it is. I really can't understand the thinking behind those upswept pipes. No way to carry bags and any passengers better be REAL careful. That is design for design sake and I beleive that from should follow function.

I recently heard from a person {who probably knows more about Triumphs than any of us) that there will be a ton of accessories available for this bike. He also mentioned that the bike he examined was a 5-speed. Triumph is going back to the drawing board to make it a 6-speed....
Now even though this bike has a generic look to it, it seems to have a lot of the things that many have been clamoring for on here for years. More displacement, belt drive, etc.
If it runs like a Triumph, handles like a Triumph, is bulletproof and lasts like a Triumph, I think they've got a winner here.
More flags
More fun!
