I don't think it's going straight to earth. Based on your earlier description, the spark is jumping the electrode gap first. It's pretty difficult to diagnose problems like this long distance, but I'd say there's every possiblity this isn't an electrical problem. The only way to know for sure is to put it on an engine analyzer that can inductively measure the HV current and timing.
