On top and connected to the petcock. It's usually just a fine mesh screen. BTW. The petcock is the valve that determins the reserve from the same tank of fuel. The pick-up for the regular run mode is just located higher in the tank. You could run the entire tank of gas on the reserve setting, but then you'd be out of gas with NO reserve to get you to a fuel stop.
