Guys:
Since my daughters bike wreck a few weeks back, the wife has decided no more bike for her. So, it's seems silly riding around with a sissybar and passenger pillion. When I'm not out on the road, I use the bike occasionally to ride to my office. So I need a means to strap on my rather large briefcase/laptop. I typially put the bag on the pillion and bungee it to the front/rear of my saddlebag bracket mounts. Will either the Rivco or Triumph solo seat racks handle something like this, or are they just for looks? I like the looks for Brent's solo finishers but don't think they would keep my bag off the fender paint.

I have the solo rack. I think it's the same one Brent sells.
I got it from a poster here who unfortunately wrecked his speedy.
I use the rack to haul all sorts of stuff.
from boxes to the P.O. to a bag full of gear for the range. I ride to work almost all the time and put my backpack on it.
I usually end up hooking the bungees to the fender or easy bracket mounts because what I'm carrying is usually to big to get under and hook to the rack. The rack seems more to keep the stuff off the fender and centered than anything else.

The 2nd picture, the one with fluted cutouts is the one Brent sells (on his Rivco page). The top one is the Triumph item. I just need it to keep the items centered as you described. The Rivco one looks a little sleeker and it's cheaper to boot.

The Triumph rack is nice and sits up higher in the back for a more level rack. I have this one on Karens bike and since it sits up higher its easier to strap things to it.
Expensive $140 retail/$119 at MADSS.

I dont know much about this one. Looks cool but $114.95...eh!

Theres this one as well. Brent sells this one and I have had it on my bike. Its made for a Sportster but fits our bikes. I had to elongate the mounting hole a touch but it was fine. This one hugs the fender closer and looks better overall. Good price $65.89.

I have the "sportster" rack on mine, well made and very strong. One caveat, it follows the curve of the fender very well so large flat objects may need a spacer to fit snuggly.

I have the RIVCO one, I haven't strapped anything to it yet, I mainly got it for the looks, form over function

I figure someday I'll have something to strap to it tho... someday.

There's quite a few Sporster rack on Ebay for around $30. What kind of modification needs to be made so they fit? Someone mentioned elongating the hole (which one?). The Sportster racks all seem to say "11 inches, hole to hole". I'm traveling and have no idea what space is on our fenders.

The Sportster rack fits mine perfectly, no modification at all. Be sure to mount it with some kind of rubber between it and the fender or it will sctratch the paint. Fits too close to the fender to pass a bungie hook underneath.

That's cool. I will use my saddlebag bracket connections to the rear fender for bungee cord mounts. I'll grab up one of those from Ebay.

That's my bike in that pic. Rack is awesome, and sits lower than the Triumph unit. I actually still have a Triumph one.... got it used from someone for cheap. Anyone want it? Someone said put rubber between it and the fender, that's right. altho mine came with some stick on rubber I think. I use a neoprene washer under the rear mount of mine to protect the paint.

How much do you want for it?

Ihave the one from brent that looks like the triumph one. I made some spacers to raise the back because the first time i put it on it bent the fender. It looks better now as it better matches the arch of the fender.
I use it almost every day to cart my work computer back and forth. Good crome job too and it looks good with my BCC seat.

Do they all slot over the seat bolt?
Or do you need to undo it?

yep the Sperty rack can be had for a really good price if you look around and fits like it was made for our bikes. Look on Ebay.

Bought one yesterday for $30. Does the front slot onto the seat bolt, or underneath? I'll probably pick up some shiny hardware from Ace (stainless and polish).

My non Triumph one does not. I think it required a new seat bolt to be purchased per Brent's advertisement at New Bonneville.
I made my own.

The ones I have seen used a different bolt for looks so I really couldn't tell you for sure if the stock bolt would do the trick or not but it seems as though it would be long enough. There isn't much stress on it.

Thanks guys. I'll hit my local Ace hardware, which has a nice selection of chrome metric bolts. I think the rack is supposed to arrive today.

There are nine "buy it now" Sportster racks on Ebay for around $35. Got mine from a vendor in Rome NY for $30 plus $10 shipping.

Product arrived today, installed this evening. Wow, fast shipping from thie Ebay vendor. Chrome looks top notch, they included a neoprene pad on each end. I bought some chrome fasteners from Ace and I'm good to go.
Here's the vendor:

Mine came with rubber on both mounts. HOwever, I notice the aftermarket thumbscrew type bolt on the rear. Be forewarned, though I have no idea if it will happen to you, that I lost two of these bolts from the stress applied by the stiffer Harley rack. Both bolts sheered completely off at the head during BA.com rallies. One hit a trailing rider in the head. Luckily, he was wearing a full face. I now have a washer and stainless allen head in their place. Not sure what happened, but it happened to me. Twice.

The rear bolt is still the factory bolt but I added a small chrome washer underneath. I replaced the front slip head bolt with a chrome allen head and a washer. Both with some locktite. But, I'll check them after a few weeks of riding.
