Toady was the only day of the weekend I mangaed to get out on the bike. And noticed two things, the scooter population is growing by leaps and bounds. And the fashion seems to be riding 2 up with bicylce helmets.(the spandex crowd getting lazy?)

At the same time seems the number of for sale Harleys on the side of the road has increased. At the end of my street
there is a very pretty Sportster for sale, Must have every chrome dod-dad Harley makes on it. Custom paint. Add it all up must be around a 14 grand sporty. Been sitting there for 4 days now. Uncovered 24hrs a day. In the sun in the rain.I havent stopped to check the milage on it, but think I will tommorrow.

So have all the dentist that bought Harleys in the past 5 years trading up to scooters?

rats just realized psoted to wrong area can somone move to other bikes please.

Scooters are COOL!!! However, a large, pot bellied person on a Vespa with a bicycle helmet just doesn't look right...

I saw a Whizzer the other day zipping by. They now make two models, and yes, they are still in business - maybe not owned by the original peeps, but what company is?

Unless it is a genuine scooter, all other scooters are fake scooters.

Forgot to add that both those bikes are 300cc and liquid cooled. They are actually considered a full size bike not like the mini choppers. And they are vertical twins like triumph!!!

Darn good point there, Angel!

Yep, if you buy a scooter, you don't have to go through the "drudgery" of manually changing gears...a "drudgery" I personally never mind going through on a motorcycle because I like selecting the proper gear to be in, and never have felt comfortable not having some aspect of throttle-management and engine braking available to me and just "coasting along" on two wheels a lot of the time as one does on a scooter.

(you see, I already have an automatic in my Silverado...and I've "coasted through life" much too much as it is already!!!)

Now that's a real scooter. My dad had a '57 Eagle back when you could get scooter license at age 14 as long as it was under 5 horsepower. It started his hotrodding career as he and his buddy ported the block, milled the head(sandpaper on a piece of glass) and a big carb. They even custom ground a cam after blowing up a few lawn mowers for testing.

It's an idea whose time has come, after many years of wasting fuel in the name of ego. My only wish is they would make it mandatory to achieve at least 50 MPH if they're going to run the secondary roads. The ones that roll 15 MPH under the speed limit are an accident waiting to happen.

I'm also seeing quite a few $100 per fill-up rides along the road for sale. One of my former co-workers was whining the other day that his late model V8 pickup is parked unless he uses it to go to the dump, at a mile away. With tax & all, that's a $500 per month dump bill. An 8 yard dumpster with bi-weekly pick up costs around $40 per month. Hmmm...

Rent one for a day, ride all day and then fill it up again (about $2) before you turn it back in. There's your answer.

I'm aaalll-most ready to ride the wife's to work (with the afternoon rains, I stay drier on it than I can on the America), but I'm still working on some ego issues.

Last night I was following a scooter through town,
( My sons had a few so I always check them out).
Anyway I thought the young lady was wearing track suit but on closer inspection as I overtook she was out in her pyjamas

I dont have a scooter myself, but would have no problem with one, just dont need one as I have one of these babies

If Honda brought back the 250 Ruckus, I'd be at the dealer quick. The 50cc just won't do it for my fat - ahem.

With fuel cost projections, I give YamaHondaKawaZuki 12-18 months before they start bringing in something viable in the 200cc range. The China scoots are eating up that market share and the current Japanese lineup is either too small 50cc or too big 275cc-650cc+ (Reflex, Silver Wing, Burgman) and at their prices, a standard MC is cheaper to buy.

One of the new engineers at work (young kid just out of college). Bought one of those Chinese ones Xingbangchang or somthing. Ordered it online. Was delivered UPS in a cardboard box. He said with shipping it was just over a grand. We are all waiting to see if it falls apart by the end of summer.

As soon as the state and the insurance companies figure out they are losing money. Some kind of reg, licence and insurance
and of course annual property tax will become manditory.

I've seen lots of scooters around. I don't understand the attraction in this area, I would much rather have a motorcycle. Maybe if I lived and worked inside of Boston.
And your right the used HD market is crashing.

I am seeing it too,the prices are dropping on HD like crazy....good , its about time.
HD riders are all selling their rides at the same time. They overpaid and now its time to take a beating.
I wonder how attendance is at motorcycle events this year with the price of gas? Maybe Sturgis will become a scooter only event

Oh man that was cold dude.

The OL told me that on last nights evening news,They interviewed somone from Grengras(Triumph/HD/Ducati/Bmw/vespa)
Super Store. Said they have sold thier entire stock of scooters. Are taking orders for more. But may not be able to get them. In the same report Police are warning scooter owners to lock them up. Been a rise in thefts.

Looks like American manufatures have missed yet another boat.

The really cheap ones are disposable. Ride 'em for 5000 miles and buy a new one. Parts are interchangeable between brands (and cheap), so if he's got the mechanical skills and doesn't mind tinkering, he'll be laughing all the way to the bank.

Advise him to change the fluids soon (oil, brake, etc.). At that price, what they filled with it at the factory is questionable.

I've noticed here that the scooter riders seem to fall into two groups. First, economy minded people who have been forced to go to a scooter because can no longer afford the gas to drive to work or go on an errand.

Second, The artsy, fartsy, metrosexual types trying to look like European yuppies on a tour around Paris.

2003 Speedmaster I won't rise to the occasion, but I'll slide over to it.

Hmmmmm.

Well Bob, does maybe that second group o' people you mentioned there kind'a remind ya of yet another "select group" of folks lookin' to buy some sort of "Lifestyle" at their nearest "you-know-where" motorcycle shop?

HUH?!

Of course, those two distinct and separate "groups" might have at least agreed about one thing if only H-D still made these babies HERE....

I cant imagine many loyal HD riders admitting to Harley ever producing a 'scooter'.

However, if someone had one of those stashed away in a garage somewhere i bet that little Topper is collectable and worth quite a bit. Maybe worth the price of one of HD's modern 'scooters'.

One of my favorite Who films and albums. I have an original copy on vinyl with the gate fold sleeve and book. Quite collectable i believe.

Well, not "exactly", Mark.

About 5 or 6 years ago, one of guys who's a fellow member of the SoCal Norton Owners Club had one of these Toppers, and I remember him trying to sell it at a one of the vintage motorcycle show and swap meets that they run around here.

I think he was asking something like $1500 for it at the time, and it sat, and sat, and sat all day, and think he finally unloaded it for somethin' like $1200, and I can't imagine that they've gone all that much higher in market value since then.
