I was in the hospital a few years ago and in the bed next to me was a school teacher, who thought her breathing problem was a heavy chest cold and oh yes their smoking habit didn't help either, but she was convinced that her problem wasn't related to her smoking habit at all. I overheard all this in conversation she was having with a nurse she was trying to talk into getting her outside during the nurses break so she could have a smoke. If I recall, I think she may have even offered to pay her...Two days later she was released with a lung machine by her side to enable her to breathe....the kind you can't smoke near or strike a match....Start calling yourself a non-smoker, take deeper breaths, consider how much you're not giving to the government in taxes, consider how offensive someone else's smoke might be to yourself or other non-smokers. good luck...lose sight of the fact that you ever smoked...you're a non-smoker...

Logs time you've not smoked, how many you've not smoked, money saved etc. Good luck to you! Been smoking 26 yrs and have noticed recently it's starting to take its toll. Have set a date soon for packing in and am serious, hopefully will crack it this time...

Glad to hear you quit (while you're ahead). I took a different route toward quitting.. I had 1/2 of my soft palate removed due to a tumor.. I was 27. Had to learn to talk, eat and drink again. No fun.. give up the fags now!

have you noticed some of the most self righteous views are from EX smokers...... thats because we are all smug and have gotten off the weed. So Kid and Jack stay with it, stay focussed you know you can beat it ....... and join up with us smug b*st*rds, keep eating the cherries and saving that brass, money can be very focussing.

Hang in there buddy!
I'm gonna quit soon myself. nearly £6/$12 for 20 fags here. Once I get back from Ibiza I'll give it a go.
I might be getting made redundant later today... so now is not the time for quitting for me
So, when is good??

What works for me...I decided that NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS, NO MATTER HOW LONG IT TAKES, NO MATTER WHAT I HAVE TO DO...I will not smoke. Once I made that decision, sincerely and honestly, it was easy. When I had been saying "Maybe tomorrow I'll try", "I'm going to give it a good hard try", "I think I can do it" and all the rest of the self-deluding stuff, I had no success and attempts were very awfully difficult. I was a hard core smoker; minimum pack a day, often as much as three a day for many many years. Hope I'm not sounding self-righteous or anything, I make too many mistakes for that.

I quit 50 pounds ago, but I don't regret it for a minute. Had stopped several times before, but always went back. This time, I used the patch and Zyban (Welbutrin). I enjoyed smoking, but knew it was time to quit for my health. Still hung out downwind from the smokers to catch a whiff, but only outside - never in a closed space. As time passed, I found myself standing farther and farther away. 6 months and I wasn't there anymore. Been over 12 years now and my MD says he can find no evidence that I ever smoked (though I did for 25+ years). Can't say I don't still get the urge, but not very often anymore.
I would like to find the money I'm supposed to be saving though.

I finally quit for the last time about the first of the year. Cold turkey, no gum no patch no hypnosis no toothpicks. I had "quit" about three other times, but the difference with the other times was that I wanted to smoke but wasn't (until I did again). This time I stopped wanting them cause I was just sick of smoking. Got a random urge to have one about a month ago...one half drag was so disgusting I wanted to go lick my tires to clean my tongue off. The real key (IMHO) is to quit cause you really want to stop, not cause you think you should quit. Oh and it takes 28 days to form or break any habit, so after the initial couple days when the actual nicotine addiction is gone, the big milepost is your 28th day when the habit of the smoking action is gone. After that, anyone quitting should be home free Good luck.
