I just got an email from our "Transportation Coordinator" about the " Carefree Commuter Challenge". Of course they don't list motorcycles as an alternative mode of transportation. It's frustrating and I think it's complete blatant discrimination. I sent the following email to the contact they have listed on their web site ( henry@pacwestcom.com). Quote:
How come motorcycles are not listed as an alternative travel option? Motorcycles use less gas than cars which not only saves on using gasoline, but because of their fuel efficiency they emit less emissions than cars. Motorcycles are smaller than cars which reduces traffic congestion. In my opinion not including riding motorcycles or scooters in the "Carefree Commuter Challenge" is discrimination against motorized bikes and the people who choose to ride them instead of driving four wheeled motorized vehicles.
Yes, I know that bikes do not necessarily get better gas milage and emit less emissions, but most of them do and it's just plain frusterationg that motor bikes get discriminated against as a legitimate form of alternative transportation. You woudl thing that all teh greenies would be all for bikes (but they, and this, really are not about the enviroment which is another story for another day). I'll let everyone know if I get a response back.

But, motorcycle riding is restricted to those horrible biker people. They know because they've seen those movies on late night TV.

Personally, I don't want to be associated with the greenies in any way, shape, or form. Those knuckleheads want to "conserve" us back to the stone age.

I don't know, Soren. I remember in another thread which was posted recently around here where one of our members questioned the logic of one of his co-worker's when said co-worker asked for his opionion if he should buy a motorcycle in order to save on gas. And, there were more than a few of us around here who basically said in that thread that if that was this guy's main reason for buying a motorcycle, then maybe he shouldn't buy it...and I have to somewhat agree with that opinion. Not everybody, in fact, probably a very few of the general population should even consider riding a motorcycle, as it usually takes quite a while in order to master not only the operation of these babies, but even more importantly, it takes even longer to learn to ride well enough in order to ride in and around traffic and stay in one piece. Where as anyone could immediately catch the bus or van, ride a bicycle, or even walk to get to where they're going without increasing their risk of injury, using a motorcycle to commute would realistically only help a very small number of commuters...those "brave enough" to attempt doing this. And so, maybe that's why this agency didn't include motorcycles on their list. (I mean think about it...you know how the average cager is out there don't cha?...Do you think those morons would have any clue about how to stay alive on a motorcycle, for pete sake???!!!)

I agree. I'd rather just see how long the oil lasts and see how expensive it gets. Eventually people will not just want to change, they'll need to. Maybe it will be bicycles. Maybe Fuel-Cell technology. Maybe Biodiesel. Or maybe (especially up here) it will be back to riding horses. It will be interesting.

But but but, think about it one step further. These learned cagers/rookie motorsicklist, looking to reduce their gasoline consumption and try to motorsickle may succumb to the law of natural selection. Tragic as it may be, those of us that do ride will have that many less cell phone imprinted cagers to worry about. I observed a middle aged lass riding a scooter the other day. If it hadn't been high noon and she wasn't being followed by her paramour I would have thought she had been nipping at the bottle, such as her wobbling forward motion would suggest. I was scared to death for her, although I did have a big Thata girl too. Scary. Very scary these folks that would take up two wheeling for the sole reason of saving gas.

I little off topic, but here in Califorina, they just made it against the law to talk on a cell phone with out a hands free device while driving. You can get a hefty fine.

The news said it was a $50 fine in Cali. Not very hefty.

What do MEAN "not very hefty", Sid???!!!
Why I'll have you know that at 5 bucks a gallon, you'd be able to put about 10 gallons o' gas in your Cadillac Escalade, which MIGHT get cha from Pacoima all the way to the Mexican border!
(hhrumph..."not a hefty fine" he says!!!)

I fear that the final result will be a repackaging of that silly looking ear mounted blabberphone and they will end up operating a vehicle they can barely manage when paying attention. Even more carnage and bloodshed will result.

On the news last night they said that it's still perfectly legal to send text messages while driving.
It is in no way safer to ride in California. In fact, one could make the case that it is now much more dangerous.

Well, I talked to the "Transportation Coordinator" here at work. She agrees with me and during the planning meetings with other companies participating and the government sponsor department, the companies argued allowing motorcycles count as alternative transportation, but the government agency just would not have any of that crazy talk or listen to reason. The companies all decided that the government agency in charge is flat out anti-motorcycle because they are threatened by the freedom that motorcycles represent and the very thought of freedom goes completely against their social communist ideals.

MAN Soren, after readin' THAT, if I didn't know how far Beverton Oregon was from Tucson Arizona, I'D SWEAR you've been hangin' around with a certain other fellow BA.com member who will remain nameless here, dude!!!
COME ON! Like I said earlier in this thing, I'd BETCHA their reasoning has more to do with the idea that motorcycles ARE inherently more dangerous than most any form of transportation and NOT BECAUSE this group has...what was that again Kevin...err...I MEAN SOREN...any "social communist ideas"!!!
(oh..and I forgot...even YOU admitted in your original posting here that the average motorcycle is "dirtier", exhaust emissions-wise, than most modern cars, which IS TRUE, BTW...and so THAT could be yet another reason for this agency's views about this)

So we take this to fruition... based on moe's sordid scenario...
Any chucklehead who joins the choir invisible as a result of using a cell phone whilst driving or attempting to pilot a 2 wheeled conveyance only to reduce their fuel bill will immediately become donors to the biofuel cause.
I even have a catchy slogan - "Fools for Fuel"...
