I'm not so sure about that "ankle action". I'll pay more attention after while when I'm out, but seems to me that I'm not actually using the "ball" of my foot, but rather my forefoot, to kick down the heel end of the shifter to upshift.
More of a learned "finesse move" , but becomes quite naturalafter a while. I don't have foot boards, mind you, so I'm merely lifting my foot from the peg and pushing down on one end of the shift lever, or the other, depending on what I need to do at the time. Only a light touch required, as it snicks into gear very easily.
