Took the Mrs out for a Sunday ride. Did our usual ride to nowhere thing. But our Sunday rides always have 2 things in common. Part way though we stop for ice cream or a burger or somthing but ride always ends the same.
Stop at local Mom and Pop coffee shop just down the street. We get 2 ice coffees sit at the picnic tables talk about the ride and count the people with cell phones stuck to their heads driving by.(we're wild ones I tell you). So todays ride ended like always kinda. Pulled into the coffee shop. And found out that Mom and Pop sold out to some chain. Cant rmrber the name "Gay Island Coffee" or somthing like that.We get off the bike (wet thanks to the thunderstorm we hit). I go inside. Place has been all done over looks like a cheap copy of a Starbucks (spit). Complete loss of small town local flavor. Dont even have the grill anymore used to be able to get breakfast there. Instead thay got this Frankenstien lookin coffee grinding contraption. So I go up to the counter and say "2 large regular iced coffees please."Regular used to mean with cream and sugar. The girl goes in the back comes out five minutes later and says we dont have any regular coffee made. If you want to you can wait. What? this is a coffee shop right? she points me to the "menue" menue? I want a freaking coffee. They have about 10 "flavors" anybody ever heard of a pinacolada coffee? But no just plain freaking coffee.I just turned around walked out me and OL got back on the bike, went down the street to the duncan freakin donuts.

At least S'bucks always has plain coffee, granted, it's a different blend/type/roast every day, but it's just coffee. No fru-fru flavor. You get it black. They'll leave room for poison (cream and sugar ) if you want.

I had to quit drinking coffee a long time ago - doesn't agree with me - but before that day, Dunkin' Donuts had the best coffee around. Around here, anyway.

Not us Yankees, you ask for regular you get cream and sugar. You want straight black you gotta tell em that. Call it a regional thing.

Hmm, looks like the wrong place to confess I roast and brew my own beans. And, like Mike, regular coffee to me is black, straight up, no foo foo.

Not at all Ed. I do buy mine pre-roasted, but grind them fresh for each pot. Strong and black. I like the french press for best results. I can make it very strong without any burning risk.
What's the deal on roasting your own anyway? Info please.

It's pretty sad when you go to a "coffee shop" and have to ask them if they have coffee.

I would grow my own if I could but climate and elevation defeat me
Green beans are quite a bit less expensive than roasted and last for months without going stale. Roasted beans stay fresh for about a week to 10 days so small batches work well for us, just two drinkers on the farm.
I use a contraption called the iRoast from Hearthware Home Products to roast five batches for the week, each batch gives up a couple of large pots. It's a very compact machine that allows you to program different roasting curves to suit your needs; best used outdoors as roasting produces a prodigious amount of smoke (although it does come with a vent adapter for indoor use). Beans ship in from NJ based 1st-Line restaurant supply house once a month UPS. I'm having a nice cuppa Kenya AA as I type this...
I got started at a website named Sweet Maria's with a Whirly-Pop stove top popcorn popper and I just migrated toward automation as things progressed. I don't think I could ever not roast my own after tasting truly fresh coffee

I used to stop at Starbucks in Newington, as it was the only game in town Sunday mornings when I would visit my daughter at Cedarcrest during her 5 year stay. I can't recall ever going in there without a sourpuss attitude for why it takes 17 night classes & a talking dog to order a frikkin' cupacoffe... ...although, I kinda wish I was the guy who invented the $5 coffee industry. I'd have to retire from a bad back from carrying all that money to the bank.
While I'm at it in rant mode, whatever happened to "small?" "Sorry, we don't have small, we have medium." "F' you - I want a small!" I reckon that whole small is extinct thing makes sense to somebody, but it blows way over my head. I gotta go back to Mrs. Brown from first grade and tell her she f'd up. There is no small. Medium is small.
Or when finished ordering fast food from a talking billboard, the question: "Do you want, THE MEAL?" F'! I hate it when they ask that. Didn't I just order a meal? Did McDonalds somehow corner the market on unemployed used car salesmen to man the windows, or did my car slip through a Bizzaro World parallel universe portal as I rounded the bend? I never know what to say. My best shot -- "I don't know." Let 'em gnaw on that a while.

Well some got my point some didnt. weather "regular" means black or cream and sugar, or if dunkin donuts coffee is realy warmed up pond scum or not.
Point was this place is so geared the selling the fu-fu crap. That a just plain coffee was not availabe. Unless I wanted to wait around while they ran the beans through the Frankengrinder then did a new age jahubie dance around them to chase away the bad ju-ju.
Maybe I caught them on a bad day. We'll try them again next week. As long as they havn't replaced the wooden picnic tables with some french cafe looking garbage. I'll send the Mrs in next time. She's better at dealing with PC crowd, I'm likey to go up to the counter and expell methane.
Oh and somone "enlighten" me? Just wtf it "Chi-Tea" anway?

Aw come on, It aint that bad. I would have never drank as much as I did when I was younger if it was. I lived in Vermont for a year and I used to go through 2 32oz cups of Dunkin doughnuts coffee a night ( I worked 12 hour nights at IBM up there ) Hmmm 64oz of coffee, no wonder I left with and ulcer! Oh and Regular in that neck of the woods was black, if you wanted to add cream and sugar you had to tell them light and sweet! Mark

Judging from the smell, I think Starbucks "coffee" is made from boiled dog poop. It definitely rated 3 barfs.

People go to Starbucks primarily for the trendy "ambience" of the Seattle phenomenon . Most people dilute the intended basal flavor with creamers half and half sugar saccarin apartame shots half - decalf latte macciato half nonfat sugar free sugar caramel mint froth whipped cream cherry topped perversion . " That'll be 6.87 , please . " You should go to Ethiopia and sit down on the floor with some indigenous Ethiopians , preferrably of the Kaffa tribe heritage , and have some REAL coffee . WOW ! BTW - the botannical name for coffee , Coffee arabica , has its' roots in the name Kaffa . Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee as we know it . Study "dancing goats" .

Dunkin Donuts, SPIT! Sorry, when I want a little coffee with my milk, I'll go back there, or if I forget to go get coffee (8 O'clock Brand 100% Columbian, nothing else!) DD, ONLY when I have to! And Starbucks, never! Panera's not bad, at least they have a passable dark coffee that's slightly better than DD and not as expensive as Starbutts.

Partial to McD's coffee myself. While the wife is waiting in line for her Frappucino at 4Bucks, I walk to Mickey D's and am back sitting at the 4Bucks table with a large black coffee when she comes out. Some strange looks from the coffee elites, but nobody's ever said anything.

I know what you mean, however, you can look at it this way... maybe "mom and pop" are relaxing on a remote exotic island somewhere, enjoying the fruit of their labor or maybe they are in their front porch sipping a hot cup of joe; all the same.

Regular=cream and sugar. I agree. When we lived in Seattle I learned to order "drip coffee", I'm pretty sure it was me and the homeless guys only cause I would get some odd looks.

Well, being a from the great northwest, and that I worked in coffee shops here for more than five years. I am a total coffee snob, sometimes I drink it black, sometimes with raw sugar, and half and half. Sometimes, I even get a mocha or a latte. Hot or iced, I like them all. I even worked at Starbucks when they discontinued the "small". It never made sense to me, and they never explained it. Their ordering system, still only angers and frustrates customers, and barista's alike. If you like Starbucks, McD's or the mom and pop on the corner, you like what you like and it sucks when it changes. (like the '08 gas tanks ) oh and Chai Tea, is a delicious milky tea that smells a lot like nutmeg, done up usually like a latte. My wife loves it.:p Ethiopian, Kenyon, and Yemen varietals are my personal favorites. Lightly roasted, but brewed strong. Who knew a simple thing like coffee could bring out so much emotion in people.

Yup. Just gotta use the goofy size system. A venti (large, about 20 ounces, I believe) black coffee costs $1.81. And it's good. Strong, fresh, and hot!
And regular in these parts would be black. But we don't talk that way. You order coffee. You get it black. Add what you want. At Starbucks or any of the myriad other coffee joints that have sprung up, I order black so that they fill the cup.
Cream and sugar is fru-fru if you ask me , let alone all these silly flavors. Sheesh if you want a chocolate drink get hot cocoa, or a milk shake, or Yoo-Hoo. Coffee's supposed to taste like coffee.

Exactly!! Finally the voice of reason chimes in through the rhetoric, smoke n' mirrors.
I stopped at a McD's in Ronan a few years ago seeking to refill a travel mug, I forget the prices, but it cost like $0.35 more for my refilled mug versus a larger size in their container. I remarked to the counter attendant it made no sense since I'd buy their container, pour it into my container and throw away their container.
When the US/Canadian currency was about 1.3 to 1.0, I mentioned to a local bank vice president that a person could theoretically break the bank by exchanging a Canadian penny for a US penny everyday as they'd lose about 30% on the transaction, there being no smaller denomination. She asked me to leave, remarking "Some People" have too much time on their hands.
BTW: I drink my coffee steeped through a perculator and ride a Triumph motorcycle, my name is John.

I like a large (20oz) coffee with cream and three shots of espresso. It's what I usually pick up on my way to work in the mornings (not starbuks). So, it cracks me up when someone orders an Americano which is two shots of espresso and fill the rest with hot water. Whats the point of that?
