Take the fr**kin class for crying out loud!
What kind of instruction is that? I never heard one "don't look down", or "Look where you are going", or anything about using the brakes, front or rear.
Trained instructors on a closed parking lot use a SYSTEM that teaches new riders the BASICS first. Street experience comes later, but if you can't handle the bike first....at least read a book about it before trashing a perfectly good machine!
