I am a law-abiding Gun-owner and a proponent of the 2nd Amendment of the US Constitution. I believe that every American has the right to defend themselves and their family against the growing population of criminals that are becoming more and more prevalent in our society every day. Unfortunately, I live in Illinois, One of the two states in the US that doesn't recognize the 2nd Amendment. I received this today, and will be attending. Thought I'd pass it on to like minded individuals here. "As you well know Illinois is one of the only two states in the Nation that deny law-abiding citizens their right to keep and bear arms that is guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment of the US Constitution. This has been the case for quite some time and there are a great number of Illinois law-abiding citizens that are quite unhappy with being looked at as victims by the Democrat-controlled Illinois State Legislature and Governor. On July 11, 2008, an Historic event will occur in Chicago. On that day, thousands (hopefully HUNDREDS of thousands) of law-abiding citizens will converge on the city and rally for the restoration of our 2nd Amendment rights. This will be an event to mark down on your calendar. The link to the organizers of the rally is - http://chicagorally.isra.org/ "

The Ill. law is unlawfull. It is against the law to pass a law by a state that over-rides a federal law. Otherwise, if you are prosicuted, you could keep appealing till you get to a federal court and they would through it out. I would assume, the same would apply to a constitutional amandment, for the same reasons. Stick to your guns brother

Really guys??? WOW!!! I had NO IDEA that it's been illegal to hunt fowl, or shoot skeet with a shotgun(BTW, as you probably know, your BEST home protection weapon), OR even go deer hunting with a 30.06(with the proper hunting license, of course) in Illinois nowdays!!! So, tell me...when did all THIS happen, anyway??? (oh and BTW...if you ask ME...it's about friggin' TIME that the U.S. Supreme Court, which according to your prompt this is all about, finally gets off their collective DUFFS and finally decides, ONE AND FOR ALL, WHAT EXACTLY the 2nd Amendment REALLY FRIGGIN' MEANS...ONE WAY OR ANOTHER...WHICH EITHER FRIGGIN' WAY I CAN LIVE WITH, fellas!!!!!!)

Avoiding any political BS, what is this rally protesting? The right to own a firearm? The right to carry a concealed weapon? What am I missing here that I'm not getting from your post or from the link provided? Found this while surfing Illinois FOID FAQ

Thank you Stew!!! I think THAT'S kind'a what I objected to the most with Michael's..."This has been the case for quite some time and there are a great number of Illinois law-abiding citizens that are quite unhappy with being looked at as victims by the Democrat-controlled Illinois State Legislature and Governor."...section of this "notice" here!
So tell us Mike, as Stewart here is questioning, is it... the right to own a firearm? The right to carry a concealed weapon? What am I[and now, we] missing here that I'm[and now, we] not getting from your post or from the link provided?
I mean, YOU brought this up in the first place ya know, so just as I mentioned above about the Supreme Court finally clarifying what the 2nd Amendment means(as you probably realize, THE most poorly written and nebulous of all the Amendments), what say you clarify what this rally is actually for or against too, huh?!
(I'm ALWAYS willing to listen to reason around here, which I hope you've realized about me by now...and I hope you ALSO realize that my biting sarcasm unfortunately comes with the package too...'cuz...I'm sick and tired of simple-minded little bromides being passed off as "fact" in this friggin' country WITHOUT being investigated and scrutinized at least a little by a supposed "informed electorate"!!!)

So, if one owns a gun and lives in a state in which it's against the law to own a gun, how can one still claim to be a 'law abiding' gun owner?
I support the second amendment myself as well as your right to peacefully assemble, but I also feel that the term 'arms' - as in the right to bear them - should be defined and updated from when it was written and intended to mean 'single shot muskets.' Had semi-automatic pistols and assault rifles been envisioned by our founding fathers, I'm pretty certain that they would have been a little more specific - and restrictive - in what they meant. The second amendment was also written when we had no standing army or federally funded militia or arsenal, and we had to rely on volunteer 'Minutemen' to bring their own arms if called upon for national defense. I'm pretty certain we've moved past that situation. In fact, the second amendment clearly states that the right to bear arms is specifically intended to 'maintain a well regulated militia' if I'm not mistooken. The 'militia' is now known as the National Guard. Are you a member? If you're concerned about home invasion, why not invest in a decent alarm system which alerts the police? MOST home invasions/burglaries happen when there is no one at home, anyway, so having a collection of guns in your house would have a statistically greater chance of being stolen (and thus adding to the crimanal arsenal) than serving to protect your home. That's pretty much why I don't have a firearm in my own house. (I DO have a couple pellet guns for pesky varmints, though...)
Other than that, I certainly support bare arms on good lookin' womenfolk, beer arms (I have a couple of those, myself), but I absolootely do NOT support arming bears. In particular, grizzlies, because these grumpy malcontents would not participate in any gun safety courses!
BTW, I predict that this thread will be getting locked PDQ...

This is an interesting topic, given that the UK has strict gun laws.
I'm unclear on one thing, you can own a firearm in Illinois if you have the correct license?? its not as if its completely illegal?
And, if only 2 states restrict the sale of firearms, every other state can sell them to every tom, dick and harry?

The police are not an efficeintly proactive force, they try to be, but the fact is they are REACTIVE, It is my right as well as every other Americans right to protect my family. The criminals have guns and will always have guns, SO WILL I.

It always makes me laugh when "you lot" over the pond bang on (note the pun) about having this right to "bear arms" because it says so in your Declaration Of Rights. (Is that what it's called?) What most don't understand (or, more accurately, choose to forget) is that it states that you have a right to bear arms only as part of an organised militia. (As JCB pointed out, above) I'm not knocking anyone with this post; t'was just an observation. Personally, I'm glad that guns are illegal over here. I have fired guns at a local gun-club (3" barreled, .357 revolver loaded with .38 power rounds); that was in a controlled environment. It'd scare me to think that I lived in a place that anyone could have one of those things, or worse, tucked into their belt. I do realise, however, that America is a lot bigger than the UK and there are times when, for example, for someone living in a remote area, having a gun is practical/necessary/advised. I may be wrong.

A couple of my friends have recently applied for concealed carry permits. One of them is a certified gun nut with dozens of guns, the other is just your typical hunter. The latter also gave me an application. I'm thinking about it, but it's significantly limited as to be almost useless: can't carry in a govt building (I work in a building owned by the state) or a bank (duh) or any establishment that serves alcohol. Don't know that I need to spend the $55 on the permit. If the S ever hit the fan in a big way, civil unrest, etc., I'd just start carrying without the permit anyway.

can't carry- Quote:
or a bank (duh)
We can carry in a bank here in SC, unless there is a "proper (as legally defined)" sign at the entrance. The required sign is very specifically defined in the law (otherwise it isn't enforceable), and I haven't seen one yet.

Amendment II: Right to bear arms A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
Where does this say you have to be a memebr of any militia? It does not. It states that a militia is neccessary. Regardless of whether I am involved w/ a militia, state sanctioned or not (National Guard) my right to keep and bear arms SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED according to our Bill of Rights. We have already taken a great many infringements of this right because of some peoples idea of the "Better Good "

Surely there needs to be some legislation for gun control?? maybe just on handguns, since its fairly hard to hide a rifle. maybe that'll be the day to get into the trench coat business!

There are plenty of resources on the intarweb that delineate the gun control lobby's position (as well as the pro-gun lobby).
