Hi all! Newest Newbie to the Forum! I purchased a 2004 Speedmaster last thursday. Noticed several things about the bike after riding a few hundred miles over the weekend. The exhaust pops sometimes when starting the motor and all the time when decelerating. My wife hates the gunfighter style seat. The trans ratios seem like low gear could be a little lower and high gear could be a little higher. At 70mph it's turning about 4200 rpm. Seems a little high. Is that an acceptable rpm for cruising?

So SM riders can cruise 70-75 mph for extended periods at a time, say 500 miles a day, with no ill effects? What seat should I look for so my wife won't whine (and rightly so) too much?

I cruise faster than that for extended periods with no ill effects. CT 3 times now from NE PA and 80+ as long as I didn't see the fuzz and hit triple digits many times. Same with my Trip to Laconia NH 80+ MPH pretty much all the way to and from.You can hold that bike at 5,000+ RPMs all day with no problems at all. Well the 07 or newer pillion is better than the older pillion seat from the America, they made it slightly wider and padded more with a better shape from the comfort stand point.

First of all Welcome!! and congrats on the bike!!

The popping on decel is normal. It is just unburnt fuel igniting. I kind of like the sound.

Your wife is right. The gun fighter seat was never made for passengers. What you should do is either get yourself the triumph Touring seat or the solo seat and pilon pad that is made for the America.

4200 RPM at 70 mph is ok. The rev limiter doesnt kick in until 7500 rpm. I am going to guess that you may have the stock front sprocket. You may want to change that to the 18 tooth front sprocket. That is what I am using and at 80 mph, I am pulling just a touch more than 4000 rpm.

Thanks all for the posts! Is it easy enough to change the front sprocket that I can do it myself like I used to do on my old hondas? I will be looking for an America seat. May have to buy new as there are very few Triumphs around here.

Changing front sprockets is a 20 minute job give or take,including readjusting the chain.
Place a wanted ad in the classifieds here. You may find several seats.

Keep in mind that if you go up a tooth on the front sprocket, 1st gear will go higher as well. You mentioned you wanted a lower low gear. It took me a while to get used to running the bike at higher rpms. The bike loves running at 4500 rpm. You might better ride it for awhile before changing sprockets to get a better feel for what you want.

It's possible you are not running up the revs enough in first gear making you feel it needs to be lower. If this proves to be the case, going up a tooth may be the ticket.

I ride my '04 Speedmaster at 5000-5500rpm (80-85mph indicated) on the slab. I've ridden over 500 miles in a day several times and it's just fine.
It's OK, the engine is designed for higher speeds, in fact the power starts to come on around 4500 rpm. If you haven't discovered that yet, you should

If you do a lot of high speed riding you might benefit from the higher sprocket. But if you like to play in the twisties and/or do a lot of city riding, stay with the stock.

The popping may be because the air injection is in place, many have removed it, search the tech forum.
May also be a lean condition, vacuum leak, intake leak, exhaust leak, or carbs out of synch.
