I get the 'false neutral' every once in a while on up shifts. I've learned to firmly shift up to make sure I catch the next gear. Some days the real neutral is almost impossible to find.
Don't be afraid to adjust that shifter rod. Sometimes, I will get a false nuetral on bikes that I'm not used to riding but usually it's because of the angle of the shifter peg.
If it's set so that your left toe is pointed too far forward, the angle could be the culprit.
