I hate hearing this stuff, even worse when it hits home. I fear they will get more frequent with the price of fuel nudging novice bikers out there.

So true. I used to be one of three other motorcyclists at my job (we employ over 500 people); now there are at least 12 bikes parked out back on any given day. One of the original 3 had a serious wreck last year and he is a very experienced rider (not to worry, he healed, insurance bought him a new bike and he's back in the pack).
I would be unstoppable if not for law enforcement and physics.

I guess I'll be falling into the newb category soon. I've been told by all my 2 wheeled friends and coworkers to take the safety course. Practice. Practice. And practice more. Sounds a lot like owning guns.

Anyone buying a bike because of the gas prices is buying for the wrong reason. Its a dangerous game we play if you dont truely love its best to sit and watch.
I took a short head clearing ride a little while ago. Stopped at a local gas sation. Guy there on an old Honda cb1000. I talked to him a minute about the bike. 1983 in good shape needs some work though. After about 15 seconds I realized he was brand new to the game.
I watched him pull out. When he got to the egde of the parking lot,Waiting for traffic to clear.I noticed his side stand was still down. I started yellin "Hey Honda" couple times before he heard me.He looked back I yelled "Side stand". He looked, saw it, kicked it up and took off. My good deed for the day.
I guess either that year of the Honda did not have a safey kill switch on the side stand. Or this one was somehow disabled.

They do not have a cut out switch, non of the old CB range do. BUT, they do have a safty system built into the stand. There is a black rubber thingy that sticks out form the end of the stand. If you ride off with the stand down and it hits the ground, the black rubber thingy will flip the stand up. It works, looks like it shouldnt, but it does. I should know. As a newby rider all those years ago i needed it to work on a number of occasions.

I think a lot of the "new" bikes on the road are people getting back into it also. At least more bikes might equal more awareness.
Aweful news about Milo!! Only met him once, but I talked to him and his wife for a good 15 minutes, real cool folks. Dam shame.

+1
Being a year round bike commuter in NE Atlanta, I have started to get more and more questions as the gas prices have risen. The other day someone asked me: "Is it safe?".
"NO!, and if you have to ask that after driving in Atlanta traffic, just get a hybrid." The gas mileage on the bike is a bonus, the ride's the thing.
