My youngest launched a Wii controller thru my 3-year-old projection TV, so I'm in the market. After quite a bit of research I've decided plasma might just be the best bang for the buck these days. I've narrowed down the possibilities to a Panasonic 50" or a Samsung 50", both 720p. Anyone have any experience with either?

We have the Samsung 52". No complaints here. My father in law has the 37" and you can tell the difference between DVD and Blu-Ray. We need to borrow his player to see the difference on our set up.

Plasma is not good for playing games on. For example if you play racing games a lot and the screen shows gauges which stay in the same position on the screen their image will eventually burn in.

Plasma is no good for gaming or in a room with alot of light.
I bought a 47" samsung 720 for my sons wii and it works great and the picture is great.

If you can control the light, rear projection is the way to go. I have Hi-Def 92" and love it

I have a 47" Vizio LCD 1080p that is awesome and I always make sure the kid has the wrist strap on when playing the wii. Picked it up at Sams Club for $1300. I dont think I will ever go back to not having HD.

You are better off looking for an LCD, plasma besides having games HUD burning issues their life is pretty poor for the price that you pay for the unit.

Sorry snows...I call BS on this. Im a trainer for Best Buy (I teach Home Theater Audio and Video) and this is the type of false info that has been floating around for years! Typically spread by the "my friend heard" method.
The truth...
The "half life" of some of the original plasmas was 50,000 hours. (Half life being the point where the TV would have lost half its light output). Even at 50,000 hours that would be 2083 24hour days of watching TV straight or just under 6 years.
Newer plasma sets (last number I got officially was a couple years ago) will go over 75,000 hours easily before hitting the half life.
Again...sorry if it seems like I attacked but for some reason that little falsity gets to me.

Both are great brands!
My eyes favor the Samsung but some of their sets have a "glossy" panel that can be nasty for reflections. The "glossy" panel makes for a picture that really looks sharp but it can also have a mirror effect that would get annoying.
Why only a 720p? Is it a price point issue?
Like many have mentioned before...Plasma is not the best technology if your going to be gaming. They will suffer from burn in of static images such as logos (think something like the side bars on ESPN or a speedometer image form a racing game).
If your going to be playing a lot of games go the direction of an LCD. No burn in and LCD technology has gotten much better and more efficient at video reproduction over the years.
Oh...and dont forget to ask about a service plan and if it offers replacement for something like a controler through the screen.
I also got an interesting bit of info last night....had dinner with one of the buyers and it seems that 1 in 5 flat panel sets is getting serviced for something within the first year. This was a general comment and covered the flat panel segment as a whole for the industry. Still...interesting info.

720p vs. 1080p...kind of a price thing, but I've also seen both in homes with real feeds and can't tell much difference except for blu-ray or games. Don't have blu-ray, don't do games (except the kids' Wii) and there isn't much in the way of 1080p HDTV broadcasts right now. Actually took the dive on the Panasonic last night. Found one for $1080. Too good a deal to pass up.

not a problem, it is discussion right? I am a visual effects professional... historically speaking the life of plasmas flat out stinks. The tech has recently changed; manufactures changed green phosphors and claim that life is around 60,000 hrs; the key word here is "claim" it is just too early too see weather the recent changes do perform as the manufacturers "claim" But hey you train on the info that the manufacturers tell you, right?. BTW Best Buy always want to sell me extended warranties...
